Ryan Shaw: "John is very cordial" (September 25, 2007)
It's impossible to listen to 26-year-old Ryan Shaw without hearing echoes of the past. For a young guy who never heard pop music growing up in Decatur, Ga., with just one album under his belt, Shaw has been drawing comparisons with some storied names. On the heels of a Summerfest gig, and in anticipation of tonight's show at the Pabst Theater, Shaw answered a few questions.
Question: You've toured with John Legend and Joss Stone. Sometimes opening acts rarely even see the headliner, and sometimes they form friendships. What was your experience like?
Ryan: I opened for John Legend, but I didn't actually tour with him. John is very cool. He's very cordial; there was no hanging out-type thing. With Joss, we've hung out a couple of times, one time in particular at Dave Chappelle in Aspen, Colorado. . . . She's got a lot of stuff to do so I rarely see her, but when I do see her she's so down to earth and talented, so we get along very well. We actually did a duet (in a recent concert), "A Change Is Gonna Come." More.

Quincy Jones admires John (September 24, 2007)
Industry legend Quincy Jones revealed that Mayer, John Legend and Coldplay are three current acts he admires, and shared a tip for creating platinum records: “I go for goosebumps — when I get the goosebumps, I know someone else is gonna get them,” he told us. “And anyone who says they can go in there and figure out how to sell fifty million albums is lying!"

Megaforce Will.i.am is no longer 'Ordinary People' (September 23, 2007)
He dreamt up one of the world's biggest groups (Black Eyed Peas), penned and produced songs for some of the top albums of the last year (from Justin Timberlake, the Pussycat Dolls, John Legend and Fergie). And this week he'll release his first true solo CD, tagged with the populist title "Songs About Girls" and festooned with the shiny-sounding hit "You Know What It Is." In fact, Will says, the notion that black radio stations and video channels have never wanted to eat his Peas is the reason he set out to produce other acts to begin with. Starting in '06, Will began taking on projects by artists unquestionably accepted by the black media, from Mary J. Blige to The Game. At first, that only led to more frustration. When the song he wrote with Legend ("Ordinary People") won an award from BET for its performer (Legend) but not for himself, Will saw red. "It really messed with me," he says. It's hardly the first time African-American media have ignored a black performer perceived as too pop for their formats. But eventually, Will says, his frustration freed him. "It allowed me with this new solo album to just make the record I wanted to make," he says. "[I didn't] worry about formats and who's going to play it." Continue reading here.

The Dream Concert to Benefit Martin Luther King, Jr. (September 19, 2007)
You're really asking for it when you call your event "The Dream Concert." But the show that teetered under that weighty title at Radio City Music Hall last night could certainly claim a dream lineup as well as a cause worth turning from reverie into reality. Aretha Franklin, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, Jessye Norman and nearly a dozen other stars sang and played in a night meant to help raise funds to build a memorial to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Unlike some benefit shows, this one found few performers failing to acknowledge the reason for the event. John Legend ditched singing his hit "Ordinary People" in favor of his political "Freedom Now," which benefited from some busy Elton John-like piano frills. Ryan Shaw offered a righteous vocal on "Change Is Gonna Come," while Babyface turned his romantic "Change the World" into a social comment with a harder edge.

Update: The 59th Primetime EMMY Awards (September 18, 2007)
John Legend gets on the stage at the TV Guide party at Les Deux, and the crowd goes nuts, though not as ecstatically as I would expect for a Grammy winner. Perhaps they're hungry? Aside from the occasional hors d'oeuvres or cheese and crackers under the cancan girls, this is a champagne-and-cigarette scene. Unless you're Stacy Keibler, who's holding her ubiquitous bottle. One lucky girl gets to slow dance with Mr. Legend before he picks up the volume with "Dance to the Music." The crowd goes extrawild when Kanye West takes the stage. Especially Lisa Rinna, who's shaking her arms in the air like crazy. Legend joins in on "Gold Digger" to help out his fellow singer, who tells us he's losing his voice so he has to keep it short. Read more here and watch a video from the red carpet here. Pictures can be found in this gallery.

John Legend's brother delays own album to do musical (September 13, 2007)
In the musical "From Motown to Gospel," Vaughn Anthony will play a local pastor who walked away from a big-time record deal to pursue the ministry. Crazy? Actually, Anthony would prefer to think Motown is the crazy one — for turning down his brother, John Legend, and maybe passing on him, too. "I visited with someone at Motown and she said, 'That sounds like John,' " he explained. "What'd you expect? We came from the same mother." Anthony, the R&B hopeful born Vaughn Stephens, has been trying to find a distributor for his forthcoming debut album — one of the first for Legend's own Home School Records label. But the North High grad realizes Motown is pretty insignificant — especially considering Motown fell out of favor with God when it left Detroit. "At the end, your soul is greater than anything," Anthony said. (...) He'll soon spend three weeks in Atlanta to work on tracks with producer Teddy Riley (of Bobby Brown's "My Prerogative" fame). With any luck, the new single "Listen Up" will create the right amount of buzz, not only for himself but the entire Home School crew. For the song, Legend united his talent roster — Anthony, rapper and fellow Springfield native Shawn Diggy (aka Shawn Terhune), and British rapper Estelle — for its coming-out party. The song soon will be sent to radio, Anthony said. "Just to let 'em know Home School's in the building," he said. Continue reading here, listen to "Listen Up" on VA MySpace page and learn more on the Home School crew here. How cool is that?! Cant wait!
Aretha Franklin to release duets CD Nov. 13 (September 13, 2007)
The Queen of Soul is coming back, and she's bringing plenty of friends with her. Aretha Franklin will release "Jewels in the Crown: All-Star Duets with the Queen" on Nov. 13, her record company announced Wednesday. The album will feature duets with Mariah Carey ("Chain of Fools"); Mary J. Blige ("Don't Waste My Time," plus "Never Gonna Break My Faith" in conjunction with the Boys Choir of Harlem); Whitney Houston ("It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be"); and more. John Legend appears on "What Y'All Came to Do"; Bonnie Raitt and Gloria Estefan join together for "A Natural Woman (You Make Me Feel Like)"; Annie Lennox pops up on "Sisters Are Doing it For Themselves"; and Keith Richards chimes in on "Jumping Jack Flash." Elton John, George Michael, Michael McDonald and George Benson also make appearances, along with cameos from the late Frank Sinatra and Luther Vandross. "Jewels in the Crown" also will feature Franklin's performance of "Nessum dorma,"which she performed at the Grammy Awards ceremony in 1998, filling in for the late Luciano Pavarotti. The collection's first single, "Put You Up on Game" featuring third-season "American Idol" winner Fantasia, is set to hit radio Oct. 1.http://www.john-legend.net/family/2.png
Kanye West's Graduation in stores now! (September 12, 2007)
Rap stars 50 Cent and Kanye West, both releasing their third studio albums Sept. 11, have been feuding in the tabloids over who will sell more records. Rap's king of sampling, Kanye West, finally delivers Graduation, the long-awaited follow up to first album, College Dropout and second album Late Registration. Often criticized for his arrogance, West earns the right to brag with his brilliant album. The style of Graduation is all classic Kanye but with new topics and even more diverse samples and killer guest appearances. West also features a host of guest vocalists including Lil Wayne, Mos Def, Ne-Yo, Connie Mitchell and John Legend (John is singing background on "Good Life" and "The Glory"). The most surprising collaboration is with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin on "Homecoming." The track isn't one of the stronger songs on the album, but it's an interesting pairing. "Flashing Lights" with Dwele and "Barry Bonds" with Lil Wayne are definitely better duets. Get the album now!

R&B sensation John Legend "couldn’t get enough" of pop prince Michael Jackson as a child, and has confessed to modeling himself on the Moonwalker. Now, there's buzz that John is going to bring back his "Legend." “John just thinks that Michael has too much talent too give it all away now,” an insider close to the star splurged to FOXNews.com. “They work really well together and are both creative geniuses. What they can do is mind-blowing — it will send the music world into a spin.” Meanwhile, Legend is set to headline a private performance at TV Guide’s Annual Emmys After-Party on Sunday. And Lindsay Lohan’s gal pal DJ Samantha Ronson is set to spin away from her new role as the door host at Hyde just to jam with John at Les Deux.

John Legend is Bangin’ Another Model (September 5, 2007)
Sources exclusively snitch to Bossip that John Legend is dating model Christy Teigen. He personally selected her for his "Stereo" video. Bossip was the first media outlet last year to break the news John Legend was dating model Danielle Abreu. One highly placed snitch says she spotted John Legend and his new girl in Bankok grinding at a club called Route over the summer. Also, they were spotted together at Men's Spring/Summer 2008 Fashion Collection in Italy last month. Some people saw her hanging out backstage at the 2007 Bumbershoot festival earlier this week as well.
John Legend performed at Bumbershoot Festival (September 4, 2007)
The Wu-Tang Clan provided a memorable send-off to the 2007 Bumbershoot festival last night (Sept. 3) at Seattle's Memorial Stadium, rolling out classics like "Protect Ya Neck," "C.R.E.A.M." and "Triumph" as well as a mini-tribute to late member Ol' Dirty Bastard via "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" and "Got Your Money." Method Man jumped into the capacity crowd on several occasions and even rapped "Shame on a Nigga" a cappella. Guitar-playing comedian Jonathan Coulton got a huge response to his tender acoustic cover of local rap star Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back" during his set at the Intiman Theatre, while John Legend warmed up the Memorial Stadium crowd with an afternoon set featuring cuts like "She Don't Have To Know," "Save Room" and "I Can Change." I can listen to it anywhere," said Legend. The songwriters were asked to name their top three and from there the list was whittled down to the final top 10. Read more here.
