Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival | Posted on November 30, 2005 by ewe

This January brings a refreshing beginning for jazz and blues lovers: the Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival. Scheduled from January 26-28, this year's lineup will include John Legend, Patti LaBelle, Maxi Priest, Shaggy, James Ingram, Al Green, Air Supply and more.
With the release of their podcast series, the popularity of this festival is exploding online. Recently, Walter Elmore hired What I Want Podcasting, a business podcast development firm that specializes in creating podcasts that integrate corporate branding. "This has never been done before; we are absolutely the first concert to use this technology. I am thrilled with the success of this new marketing tool, and it hasn't even been a full month since our debut, " says Elmore. "What I Want Podcasting has developed a great synergistic fit for our market."
The latest addition to the list is four-time Vibe Award nominee and winner of the MOBO Award for Best R & B Artist, John Legend. Riding high on the successful major label debut of his album "Get Lifted, " Legend has earned his reputation as a singer, songwriter, pianist -- delivering classic R & B, with a spin. Legend will perform on the first evening of the three-day festival. "I think it really comes down to our choice of artists, " Elmore adds. "We are always looking to please our listening and viewing audience. We do that by booking artists that have an international impact, and who complement the wonderful atmosphere we have created here over the years." Read more here.

A Legend gets his own limelight | Posted on November 29, 2005 by ewe

In Toronto on Sunday: Get a load of me. John Legend waited until the night's very last moments to introduce his (very capable) band, reading their names and where-froms off an index card taped to his piano. The delayed introduction was probably not the callous move of a self-promoter, but more likely that of an artist getting used to having so many heads turned suddenly his way. It had been that kind of a performance, right from the beginning.
While his guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, drummer and two backing vocalists ambled into view from the wings, Legend's entrance was grander, bringing himself onto centre stage from a portable set of stairs in front. "Come on and go with me," the maroon-voiced rhythm and blues artist began at the piano, "there's something new for you to see."
Certainly there was. The song -- the short Prelude, from his hit album Get Lifted -- was set to a livelier background than the more solemn, tender recorded version, but what was newest and brightest was Legend. Previously marked by his associations (credits on albums by stars Kanye West, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and the Black Eyed Peas), the singer-songwriter has now broken into his own light and he clearly enjoys this shade of lime. John Legend rises to reach R&B roots | Posted on November 27, 2005 by ewe

Rhythm and blues, it once was called.
It has had many offshoots. Motown pop. Soul. Funk. Rock - albeit in a severely white-man-tinkered version. Disco. Rap. Most recently, hip-hop. But the music has never - despite the most serious of threats, the sort that sought to steal its soul and turn it into flagrant commercial pop music, with only the thinnest veneer of its African-American roots - lost its way completely.
It has been waiting, patiently, for the sort of artist who would come along and reconnect it to its roots. To give a nod to the present-day, and then take that momentum and employ it as a force to remind people who might not remember, or might not even have been born yet, what this music means and what it once meant.
There have been artists over the past decade and a half who sought to do this. Lenny Kravitz was one, and remains one. D'Angelo is another. Anthony Hamilton has done it. Terence Trent D'Arby - who now goes by the name Sananda M'Aitreya - did it better than anyone this side of Prince.
John Legend threw his name into the pop-consciousness hat with on work he did as a session musician, mostly for hip-hop and rap stars, most notably his pal Kanye West.
But as a solo artist, as the man who fronted his own band inside UB's Center for the Arts Friday night, Legend reconnected modern R&B to its spiritual forefathers, rhythm and blues and soul. And damned if he didn't do it as a pop singer with a keen ear for song construction, a hot musician's fingers for the piano, and a soul man's talent for working the stage and the audience. American Music Awards | Posted on November 23, 2005 by ewe

The American Music Awards spread things around, with country star Tim McGraw, alternative rockers Green Day, soul stars Destiny's Child and hip-hop chart toppers Black Eyed Peas each winning two awards.
Mariah Carey, in the midst of a career comeback, had gone into Tuesday night's competition the heavy favourite with four nominations, but the pop diva took home only one award, for favourite female artist in the soul-R&B category. Notable moments provided by those who were there included an inspired pairing of Cyndi Lauper and Sarah McLachlan for a soulful version of Lauper's 1980s hit Time After Time. Actor-singer Will Smith won favourite male artist in the pop-rock division, edging out Rob Thomas and 50 Cent, while R Kelly edged Omarion and John Legend for favourite soul-R&B male artist. Ladies swoon amid his haughty croon | Posted on November 16, 2005 by ewe

The world knows that John Legend signed the debut contract at Kanye West's boutique record label, which opened a fast lane on the road to stardom for the R&B singer formerly known as John Stephens.
Legend's album "Get Lifted" fulfilled its platinum promise, but has he distinguished himself as anything other than a Friend of Kanye? Making his Indianapolis debut Tuesday at the Murat Theatre, Legend proved to be a wolf in very expensive clothing. And this hard-to-resist wolf relentlessly prowls for the next lover -- even if his last lover is his current one. It's a testament to Legend's charm that so many ladies in the estimated audience of 1,500 had no reservations about singing the lyrics of "Number One," a tune in which he cops to his Casanova ways.
The song is upbeat and optimistic, allowing the piano man to display charisma - if not grace - under pressure."Number One" seems easy to sell as a monologue, yet it's also ripe for an old-school answer song from someone of the caliber of Mary J. Blige. And while Legend might deny it, cheating is not an isolated theme in his work. "I know it doesn't happen here," he told the audience before singing "She Don't Have to Know." "It happens in other cities." Read more here.

Top Artists Play It Cool at Vibe Awards | Posted on November 13, 2005 by ewe

Top hip-hop and R&B artists were playing it cool at the third annual Vibe Awards, hoping to avoid a repeat of last year‘s onstage brawl. Leading the field late Saturday with five nominations was Ciara, while Kanye West, Mariah Carey , John Legend and 50 Cent had four nominations each. "I come into the building with positive energy, hoping the best for my people, for us just to be happy for one another," singer Mary J. Blige Mary J. Blige said on the red carpet. Johnson was sentenced in September to a year in jail after he pleaded guilty to punching the rap mogul. Young Buck, whose given name is David Darnell Brown, has pleaded not guilty in the case and is free on bail awaiting trial. Damian Marley, son of Bob Marley, described the mood as calm. "I hope it remains that way," said Marley, nominated for two awards. "That‘s where the rats crawl in, through the holes," said The Game, referring to how 50 Cent might have slipped through the back entrance. The Game and 50 Cent were nominated for Best Rapper, up against Kanye West, Ludacris and T.I. Nominees for R&B Voice of the Year included Destiny‘s Child, Fantasia, John Legend, Keyshia Cole and Mariah Carey. The show was being taped and was scheduled to air Tuesday on UPN. It was being hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross from the sitcom "Girlfriends" and Anthony Anderson from "Hustle & Flow."

Legend shows a talent for romance | Posted on November 10, 2005 by ewe

R&B newbie John Legend is nothing less than a smooth, soulful lesson in how to build the perfect pop star. He croons like a cross between Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley. He looks like a hunk who should be modeling Brooks Brothers duds. And he's best pals with all-world rapper Kanye West, whose co-production credit on Legend's 2004 debut, Get Lifted, helped send the disc into the multiplatinum stratosphere. At the Tampa Theatre Tuesday, however, the Philly-raised Legend (born John Stephens) proved for 90 minutes that his greatest strength just may be his cross-generational appeal, deftly mixing hip-hop panache with old-school grooves. After all, considering who was among the 1,033 fans at the show, it seems your mother wouldn't mind a poster of Legend on her wall, either. Read whole here.

Legend crafts lyrics that make his r&b stand out | Posted on November 8, 2005 by ewe

In John Legend's song Ordinary People, the usual dramatic entry points to a relationship -- the moment when love blooms or collapses -- are bypassed. Instead, Legend explores the subtler twists and trials of a couple trying to hold steady. "At times we get sick of love," Legend sings, "It seems like we argue every day." But the couple is determined to get through this rough spot, even though sometimes "we feel like just walking away." It's a glimpse of everyday life, a lyric that captures the emotions that any adult in a long-term relationship might experience. The words stretch out over a plaintive melody, with the anxiety still clinging to Legend's voice. The commonplace details that are the foundation of Ordinary People -- as well as Legend's million-selling major-label debut, Get Lifted (G.O.O.D./Columbia) -- are rarely heard in pop or r&b music. But they're also the key to why Legend has become one of this year's major success stories. "I felt there was a gap that needed to be filled," says Legend, who is booked Thursday at the Jackie Gleason Theater in Miami Beach. "I knew there were other people making soulful records, but most of them didn't have commercial appeal. I was trying to make something that was soulful and had an old-school feel, but was also current, hip and fresh. I felt there wasn't anybody really getting that perfect nexus of those things." Legend dazzles crowd despite late arrival | Posted on November 8, 2005 by ewe

Good singers come to those who wait, Emory students discovered Friday. R&B performer John Legend arrived two hours later than scheduled to his Student Programming Council-sponsored performance in Glenn Memorial Auditorium. Legend was delayed by the customs process at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where he arrived after performing at the MTV European Music Awards. Some students were angry about having to wait in line, in some cases for up to three hours, before being allowed into Glenn. “I was really excited [about the concert], and now I think it’s just ridiculous because we’ve been waiting for so long,” College sophomore Betty Li said. “It takes all of the excitement out of it. People are pissed off and aggravated". Read whole here.

The Star Online Review Of "So Amazing" | Posted on November 7, 2005 by ewe

DA brother’s barely been in the ground six months and already folk are falling over themselves to cobble together a tribute album to him. But in all seriousness, nobody deserves this tribute more than Vandross. A consummate entertainer, Vandross somehow managed to invest his music with emotion most other folk could never produce. Simply put, Vandross with his unique romantic lyricism, gave his music soul.
This tribute shows just how much the man influenced his peers and the generation of R&B musicians that followed him. One of the most moving tracks, surprisingly, comes from Usher, who covered Superstar, the track originally done by The Carpenters but shot into the stratosphere by Vandross. Stevie Wonder and Beyonce, representing a synergy of the old and the new, give us a tasty cover of So Amazing, while John Legend shows why he’s the one most likely to claim Vandross’ mantle with Love Won’t Let Me Wait. What Vandross himself would have appreciated most would probably be his own idols, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle, performing A House is Not a Home and Here & Now. Read whole here.

Legend speaks and sings for school levy | Posted on November 1, 2005 by ewe

From BET’s best new artist to an American Music Award nominee, John Legend is having a tough time keeping his resume to one page. But at the Wittenberg University HPER Center on Sunday, what he lists under “education” got him the job. The R&B sensation, the salutatorian of the North High class of 1995, took the Issue 21 campaign up on an offer to rally its supporters. After selling more than a million records, Legend took time off from a U.S. tour to sell his alma mater’s 10.88-mill emergency operating levy. The Springfield City Schools levy goes before voters on Nov. 8. “It’s a shame we have to go through all this,” Legend told the crowd before tearing into “Used to Love U” with help from the combined North and South high school chamber choirs. “This is a no-brainer. It’s mandatory that we invest in our students. “Even if you don’t have kids in the schools, the schools help define what this community is going to be.” The invitation-only event — a handful of tickets were made available to the public on Friday — clearly wasn’t a John Legend concert. The former John Stephens sang three songs with the choir kids, who perhaps got to sing the word “holla” for the first time. But Legend proved to be an exclamation point on the statement the levy supporters wanted to make. “We don’t know who the next John Legend in our schools is,” said Kim Fish, a volunteer with the levy campaign committee. “He was a skinny, shy kid who found what he needed. John represents what we’re capable of.” The event, then, became a rally within a rally for the district’s performing arts programs — programs Legend took part in and programs that, historically, are the first to slaughter when schools start swinging the ax.
