Huge Turn Out For Air Jamaica Jazz Fest | Posted on January 27, 2006 by ewe

Thousands of people flocked to Cinnamon Hill at the Rose Hall Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica last night, as the 2006 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival officially got underway. HBN reporter at the festival put the number to around 19-20,000 at 11:30 lats night, basing his figure largely on last year's turn out, which was estimated at about 18:00. It was more like a Saturday night crowd than an opening night one, he added, noting that way past the 11 o'clock hour, ticket holders were still sreaming in to the vanue. Many were gearing up to catch the top acts of the night - 2006 Grammy nominees, Shaggy and John Legend, who were still to take the stage at press time last night.

Grammy performers Sing Duets | Posted on January 27, 2006 by ewe

The 48th Annual Grammy Awards are stacking up a list of performers and one off duets that will probably have a little something for all mainstream music lovers.
The February 8 awards show will feature performances by nominated acts like Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay. It will also feature some duets, like the joining of Faith Hill and Keith Urban for a country duo made in heaven. There will also be performances by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx, U2 and Mary J. Blige and Christina Aguilera and Herbie Hancock. Though the songs they plan to perform haven’t been announced it’s probably a good guess that West and Foxx will sing West’s number one hit “Golddigger”, U2 and Mary J will likely sing “One” a U2 song that Mary J covered on her latest album The Breakthrough and Aguilera and Hancock will do “A Song For You” which is on Hancock’s Grammy nominated album Possibilities.
If those duos aren’t enough there will also be a star studded tribute funk soul group Sly and The Family Stone featuring Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Joss Stone, John Legend and Maroon 5 just to name a few. There will also be awards handed out between performances and you’ll probably see Mariah Carey, Kanye West and John Legend up on stage as they were each nominated for eight awards.

3rd Groovevolt Music Awards Winners Announced | Posted on January 27, 2006 by ewe

Groovevolt.com, one of the Internet's leading music sites, announced the winners Friday for its Third Annual GV Music & Fashion Awards. Voting for the awards took place at Groovevolt.com beginning December 20.
Not surprisingly, this year’s voting was dominated by Mariah Carey, who swept the categories in which she was nominated, and took home a record six GV Music Awards, including honors for Album of the Year (The Emancipation of Mimi), Song of the Year (“We Belong Together”), Best Female Pop Album and Best Female Pop Song Performance.
Another artist who made a successful, if unexpected comeback this year was Fiona Apple, who took home a pair of GV Awards for Best Female Rock Album (Extraordinary Machine) and rock Uberartist – a category in which she beat the likes of Bright Eyes, Saul Williams, Matisyahu, and Ted Leo.Other multiple award winners included the Black Eyed Peas, Toni Braxton, Destiny’s Child, John Legend, and Gwen Stefani.
Nominees were chosen from artists whose albums were released from September 1, 2004 to September 30, 2005. Singles released during that time period were eligible, even if the albums from which the song came were not yet released.
While the voting for the Groovevolt Music and Fashion Awards has ended, music fans still have the chance to register for the chance to win 125 full albums from the nominated artists. The sweepstakes, which began January 17 and wraps February 15, will award 125 audio CDs from the 125 artists who were nominated for GV Awards this year, as well as a video iPod and a t-shirt from the site where the winner entered the contest. One runner up will win an iPod shuffle.

John won in following categories:
• Best Male Album: Get Lifted, John Legend
• Best Male Song Performance: “Ordinary People,” John Legend

Top 11 Albums Of 2005 | Posted on January 26, 2006 by ewe

Whilst the nation may have been obsessed with the dreary whining of James Blunt, the cat-like mewing of Katie Melua and the ‘you’re causing me a bad day just by singing’ annoyance of Daniel Powter, we at teentoday.co.uk are a far more discerning bunch!
So here are our top albums of the year, controversially including Greatest Hits collections and heavily-biased towards albums we have actually bothered to buy (or pestered record companies sufficiently until they sent us a copy). And this isn’t just your average top 10... it goes all the way to 11! (anyone who’s watched Spinal Tap will get that... anyone who hasn’t will just think we’re weird).
11. John Legend 'Get Lifted'
There has not been a more beautiful voice, or a more beautiful album, this year... FACT. I’m a complete fiend for pop music and even I liked it, therefore I suggest you all try it. Legend lives up to his name and that super-smooth voice slips down like errr... a really nice cough medicine.
Proceed here to read whole list.

If U.S. teens could decide, the 48th Annual Grammy Awards would result in a return of former chart-toppers, according to a new Harris Interactive(R) survey. Also back on the rise, Mariah Carey was chosen by teens for the Song of the Year with "We Belong Together". Fall Out Boy was teens' pick for the Best New Artist award.
The Harris Interactive YouthQuery(SM) omnibus of 1,092 U.S. teens, aged 13 to 18, was conducted online from December 14 to 20, 2005.The poll covered three of the most popular GRAMMY(R) categories and gave teens an opportunity to pick their favorites. Results include:
- Song of the Year: "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey (27%); "Bless The Broken Road" by Rascal Flatts (14%); "Ordinary People" by John Legend (11%); "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" by U2 (10%); and "Devils & Dust" by Bruce Springsteen (5%).

Is eight enough? | Posted on January 6, 2006 by ewe

Daring rapper Kanye West, veteran diva Mariah Carey and soulful newcomer John Legend led the way Thursday with eight nominations each for the 48th annual Grammy Awards, an acknowledgment of the powerful confluence of hip-hop and R&B as the sound of pop music in 2005. Not only is West's "Late Registration" nominated for album of the year and his hit "Gold Digger" nominated as record of the year, he saw his protégé, Legend, earn a spot in the best new artist race after the success of his debut album, "Get Lifted." Carey, whose career seemed all but over a few years ago, is also nominated for best album for "The Emancipation of Mimi," a weave of urban ballads, hip-hop beats and dance-floor hits. Carey is the only nominee named in all three of the marquee categories: best album, song and record of the year. Read whole here.

2005's reasons to love music | Posted on January 5, 2006 by ewe

Ohio.com posted a list of best artists/performances of the previous year. You can read below what they wrote about John:
John Legend, Common and De La Soul at the House of Blues
For hip-hop fans who came of age in the '90s, watching two of the ``True School'' era's best -- De La (with special guest Dres from Black Sheep) and Common -- perform songs from their younger days was a blast. Hip-hop shows have come a long way from the days of terrible sound, wheezing emcees and 30 extra crew members crowding the stage. And both artists know how to work a crowd. Legend's voice sounds better live than on his fine record, and the pint-sized soul man left everything on stage.

Touring with Legend | Posted on January 2, 2006 by ewe

At the beginning of 2005, Scranton resident Tara Michel Watkins hit the road as a backup singer for up-and-coming soul crooner John Legend. As a new year dawns, the ride continues at a breakneck clip.
Ms. Watkins, a well-known local singer who once toured with R&B superstar Lauryn Hill, first met Mr. Legend (real name John Stephens) when he was music director at Scranton’s Bethel AME Church. When Mr. Legend, a protege of rapper Kanye West, recorded his first CD, “Get Lifted,” he invited Ms. Watkins to join him on the accompanying tour.
Since then, Mr. Legend’s profile has risen significantly. “Get Lifted” was a critical and commercial smash, selling more than 2 million copies, making Rolling Stone magazine’s Best of 2005 list and snagging eight Grammy nominations. In addition, Mr. Legend just released his first concert DVD, “Live at the House of Blues,” which not only features Ms. Watkins, but also local singer Denise Hudson, who joined the band for a few dates.
As a result, Mr. Legend’s shows have only gotten bigger and more boisterous. Besides the United States, the tour has made stops in Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa, among other places. “Audiences have been going crazy. Crazy,” said Ms. Watkins, noting Mr. Legend routinely has women’s undergarments thrown at him during shows. Read whole here.
