JL Interview: Living the dream (July 16, 2007)
Grammy awards, platinum albums sales and star collaborations are now second nature to JL. It's a far cry from his days working as a session musician, toiling the nightclub circuit in New York City and Philadelphia. In London for the RnB season ahead of his Live Earth apperance, we caught up with the man they call Legend to talk about the past, the present and the future.
If you didn't make it as a musician, what would you be doing instead?
It never entered my mind that I wouldn't succeed. I know that sounds arrogant but I really believed that I would succeed at my music. You have to have a certain amount of audacity to succeed and although it is challenging at times, it's also a lot of fun.
Which collaboration are you most proud of?
Love of You, is a song I wrote for Chrisette Michele. I also wrote a song for Aretha and at the B.E.T. (Black Entertainment Television) awards I sang with Stevie Wonder.
What do you think of music in the UK?
There is great music coming out of the UK, from Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen and Corrine Bailey Rae. I am working with Estelle at the moment and I have performed with Amy and Corrine - there is a lot of talent in the UK. Read more here.

The first plane brought her, while the second one - an Air Bus - brought her equipment. Earlier on Thursday, the British Reggae group, UB40 arrived Nigeria for the concert. The artistes will be joined by P. Diddy, another American hip-hop star who shall be arriving in style with a private jet in the early hours of Sunday.

JL on New Ground (July 13, 2007)
Last week, JL was a guest on New Ground where he talked with host Chris Douridas about the strong ambition he showed at an early age (he was salutatorian, student council president, and prom king in high school), meeting Kanye West in college, finding his voice on the new album "Once Again", and his love for the great Nina Simone. He also gave a stunning performances of several tracks from the new collection - as well as a cover of Simone's classic take on "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". Watch and listen here.

A legend in the making (July 13, 2007)
There's nothing about John Legend to dislike. The five-time Grammy Award-winning soul singer is polite and gentle, with a talent for writing songs that make women melt, sung in his chocolatey smooth voice. The New York resident is at the height of bachelordom, possessing qualities any single woman would want in a man - he's 28, has a successful career, and is friends with the likes of Kanye West. "I'm single right now. I'm very happy, I love being single, and I'm enjoying it," he admits. "I'm passively looking, I'm not pushing or forcing anything. I feel like it happens as it happens. I have fun being single, I have fun dating someone, and when it's not fun any more, then I want to be single again. And right now, I'm single." He adds: "It's hard to maintain a relationship with my career. It's impossible to carry on a normal regular relationship in the same way that other people do because I travel extensively. "It's also frustrating for a woman to know that her man is around a bunch of other women who are completely interested in him on a regular basis. It's difficult for any woman to deal with that, and that's understandable, and it's hard to keep a relationship intact when you have all these pressures on it." Read more.

John Legend Getting Proactive Post-Live Earth + "Another Again" video (July 12, 2007)
John Legend isn't taking his involvement with Live Earth lightly - even though the concerts ended Saturday night, he told MTV News on Wednesday (July 11) that he's trying to get more proactive. "I've been reading different stories about the environment and I'm trying to learn more about different ways that, as [artists], we can do things about it. I know as [artists] we tour and we do other things that are pretty taxing to the environment and use a lot of energy, so I've been trying to learn more about ... how to tour more efficiently." On that note, the singer/songwriter is gearing up for a trip to the Caribbean's Turks & Caicos Islands, for their Music and Culture Festival. He's also planning to shoot a video for "Another Again," after which he'll get in the studio and start work on his next LP. He's hoping to turn the effort around by the middle of next year.

Gizaw will be Legend's tour guide on visits to Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. And she most recently escorted Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker and his family on a two week tour of South Africa.

John Legend praises British music fans (July 10, 2007)
John Legend has revealed why he decided to perform for Live Earth at Wembley Stadium rather than back home in the US. The soul singer, who recently picked Londoner Estelle Swaray as the first signing for his own record label, has said that British people have a better musical knowledge. "You're open to all styles and sounds and I love that," John told the Daily Star. "That's why I signed Estelle. Get ready for her album."

Rae: 'Legend duet was rehearsed in toilet' (July 10, 2007)
Corinne Rae's duet with JL at Saturday's Live Earth was rehearsed in a toilet. Rae and Legend performed a cover of Marvin Gaye hit Mercy Mercy Me at the London leg of the climate change awareness-raising event. However, they had little time to rehearse the number. Rae explains, "We were crammed together in this cubicle. There was nowhere else to go that was quiet enough. We didn't have a chance to rehearse before that so we just had to get on with it."

JL to be featured on Keisha Cole's new album (July 8, 2007)
R&B star Keyshia Cole was so desperate to team up with Missy Elliot she took matters into her own hands and phoned up the music legend herself. Cole wanted the rapper to be one of the producers on her sophomore album Just Like You - but felt she needed to adopt a more personal approach to secure the hip-hop star's skills. Cole's second album Just Like You, which is to be released in September, features appearances from R.Kelly, John Legend and Nas. Let It Go, the first single, features Lil Kim and Missy Elliott.

Big-name acts added to Bumbershoot roster (July 8, 2007)
Fergie, John Legend, and the rock band +44 top a list of artists newly added to the 2007 Bumbershoot roster. Which goes to show that while the 37-year-old music and arts festival keeps getting older, the lineup skews ever younger. Also newly booked for the Sept. 1-3 festival are Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Tokyo Police Club, an appearance by filmmaker John Sayles ("Passion Fish," "Matewan"), political humorist Andy Borowitz and the Austin-based theater collective Rude Mechanicals.

Live Earth Concert - Ordinary People (July 7, 2007)
Just a few minutes ago JL made a brief appearance at Live Earth in London. Legend popped up between acts at Wembley Stadium to perform a single song. Performing at a grand piano set-up just in front of the main stage, Legend played 'Ordinary People'. Live Earth continues in London with Duran Duran on next, and performances coming from Bloc Party, Metallica and Madonna among others. I recorded it for you and the video is now ready for download (YouTube link).

Legend Look To Tour 'Green' (July 7, 2007)
John Legend is taking his Live Earth appearance today (7 July) seriously - he's learning how to tour in a more environmental friendly way. The crooner is playing at the U.K. leg of Al Gore's Live Earth concerts - and he has vowed to change his touring ways. He says, "Flying across the world and driving across America in a bus is not good for the environment. "I'm totally aware of that and am looking into a better way of doing things. "We still want to bring the music to people but there has got to be a solution which doesn't harm the Earth so much." The 24-hour Live Earth concert begins in Sydney, Australia and continue across the world with events in Japan, China, South Africa, Germany, London and Brazil, before concluding in New York.

Legend Nearly Took Office Job (July 6, 2007)
R&B singer John Legend admits he nearly passed on a career in music to become an office boss. The Ordinary People star says he aspired to be a top management consultant, but opted to become a musician instead. He says, "Being a musician is something I love doing, but I almost went into management as the money is good and you can learn a lot on the job."

The 5-Minute Interview: John Legend (July 6, 2007)
Legend appears on Michael Jackson's forthcoming album and performs at Live Earth at Wembley Stadium tomorrow. Read the whole piece here.
• If I weren't talking to you now I'd be...
Lying on the beach at Cannes. I'm out here at various festivals before leaving for Paris.
• I wish people would take more notice of...
Victims of poverty. We really need to make an effort to educate more people about them. I've been trying to do my bit by teaming up with [the economist] Jeffrey Sachs and touring schools and universities to get the message through.
• A common misconception people have of me is...
That I'm a serious person. People are surprised when they find out I'm actually quite easy-going and not super earnest.
• I'm not a politician but...
In the US I think we need to address the issue of inequality. In particular, our education system is incredibly unequal.
• I'm good at...
Typing. Perhaps I should have been a secretary.
• I'm not very good at...
• The ideal night out...
Begins with a good dinner, followed up with some drinks and dancing.
• In moments of weakness I...
Am very calm. I don't get stressed out by unexpected events.
• The best age to be is...
The age I am at the moment - 28. There are lots of possibilities to define yourself.
• In a nutshell my philosophy is...
Be happy and don't hang about wasting time over small things.

Alicia Keys Brings Out The Big Guns For New Album (July 5, 2007)
Alicia Keys is collaborating with some major talent for her upcoming studio album. MTV reports that Timbaland, John Legend and Linda Perry are all working on the record, which says may be called "As I Am." The album is expected to be released sometime in the Fall, but that has yet to be confirmed. Keys has not released a studio album since 2003.

John Legend @ Hammersmith Palais (July 4, 2007)
Most people regard the colour black as a safe option and its one that can be relied on time after time. The little black dress is a female wardrobe essential, the little black book contains all your trusted titbits and big black sunglasses is the colour of choice for many an incognito celebrity. In short the colour black is seen as safe, sound and reliable… but rather dull! To some, music’s nero equivalent would have to be John Legend. The musical sensation plucked from university by Kanye West has carved a niche as the easy listening soul crooner that appeals to both young and old but lacks that certain va va voom. Although his last London gig in the prestigious Royal Albert Hall wasn’t as historic as the Jay-Z and friends concert held there months previously this time round the venue of choice was the 8,671 capacity Hammersmith Apollo. Still, John Legend has come along way since 2004 where the then relatively unknown Chicagoan headlined the Jazz Café. Tickets sold for a meagre L10 and then Ordinary People happened. The single’s success was lauded with a Grammy and nominations in nearly all major award shows firmly cementing John Legends prodigal status. It’s still a firm favourite with the fans and on Thursday, he performed it effortlessly, unaided with just his piano. Read more.

John pens songs for Whitney and Jacko (July 3, 2007)
John Legend has revealed that he's written songs for Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson's comeback albums, which he has sent to them for approval. The soulful singer says that only time will tell if the stars can reclaim the success they once enjoyed. "I have written songs for both of their albums, but that doesn't mean it will be on their albums," he explains. "They can choose whether or not they want to use it. They haven't recorded yet so we'll see." John is sceptical about the fallen stars' future, saying: "Only time will tell. It's possible for either of them to come back but it really depends on the records they come out with. The public is very forgiving when somebody has a hit. "The people will be waiting. If they make music that people are excited about, then I think they can come back easily. But there's more to it than just making music. Once you get out of the groove, I think it's probably hard to put everything back in motion in the way it used to be." He adds: "It's not just about the record. You have to be willing to do all the things it takes to market it such as touring. But if they're up for it, then I think they're in a position where people want to see what they can do. They can do it."

John Legend featuring Maggie Kim (July 2, 2007)
