John Legend, Seal Snowed Out of White House Civil Rights Concert; Dylan, Smokey, Jennifer Hudson Make the Gig (Added on Feb 13, 2009)

Tonight PBS will air "In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement," a concert honoring Black History Month that was taped at Obama's crib last Tuesday. As the WSJ reports, the show was supposed to have been taped yesterday but was hastily rescheduled because of fears about the snowstorm that has been disrupting activity all along the East coast. The new recording time for the concert meant that, unfortunately, such scheduled talent as John Legend, Queen Latifah and Robert De Niro weren't able to make it to DC on time. Natalie Cole ended up filling for John Legend, and Yolanda Adams filled in for Seal. Luckily for Bob Dylan fans, he was already in the capital and was able to record "The Times They Are a-Changin'" -- not that Ehrlich knew in advance what song the musician was going to play.

Photos: Get cozy with John Legend at Fantasy Springs (Added on Feb 13, 2009)

Visit the Coachella Valley on Sunday and you might be John Legend's valentine. The R&B and soul singer performs at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio on Sunday for his second year of Valentine's Day weekend shows. So what is the main quality that a love song needs to be great? "There has to be honesty," Legend said in a recent phone interview. "When I say that I mean emotional honesty and people have to believe whatever you're saying. I think that just comes from writing it with sincerity and with the understanding of the human heart and the human emotion and the way people really interact with each other." Legend, who is from Ohio, started playing the piano as a toddler. He worked with Lauryn Hill and Kanye West on recordings and broke through to become a multi-platinum solo artist with hits such as "Ordinary People" and "Green Light." He is working with The Roots on an upcoming album called the "Wake Up Sessions." Legend said some of his favorite songs to perform live are "So High" and "Everybody Knows." "I think I enjoy those heartfelt ballads because you can tell in the audience that they really feel them and then I feel them as well and you just feel a connection," he said. The singer also stays connected with fans by giving them a slice of his life. He posts videos of life on the road, performances with other artists and what it's like backstage at various events. "I think each artist has to make a decision about how much they want to be engaged with their fans. For me I enjoy it," Legend said. "I let them into my world a bit. I think it helps them get to know me better and understand where I'm coming from and I think it makes them appreciate what I do even more."

John Legend's Wait (Added on Feb 6, 2009)

It looks like John Legend is directing his talents towards a deeper impact as he helps put the spotlight on America’s public school system. The issue takes center stage in the new film, Waiting for Superman, which recently premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film, which examines failing school systems around the country, offers a look at students, whose chance of a bright future depend on long shot lotteries that determine which children will get to attend a choice alternative school.

For the Davis Guggenheim-directed feature, Legend contributed a new song titled "Shine." The tune, which received high marks from Guggenheim, can be heard during the closing credits for Waiting for Superman.

"Shine” “was completely inspired from seeing the film and seeing the stories of the children in the film, because it follows these kids who have potential, have a certain desire to do well," Legend told the Associated Press. "They are in circumstances where they are surrounded by failing public schools, and they see the light, they see a few schools in their area that are succeeding. But you have to win a lottery to get into these schools."

Although he hopes Waiting for Superman will motivate the people to do something regarding public schools, Legend knows it will be a challenge to find an audience for get the documentary.

"I feel that this film is really inspiring, it's really moving. It has all the things you want out of a good film, the singer said. “The drama and the suspense and the interesting characters that you want to follow. It also teaches you something important about what's going on in our country."

As it stands now, the rights to Waiting for Superman have been purchased by Paramount Vantage. Look for the documentary to hit theaters later this year.

Rick Ross Says New Collaboration With John Legend Is 'Next-Level Vibe' (Added on Feb 2, 2009)

The Bawse is back and he's got his Grammy-winning friend with him. Rick Ross and John Legend recently finished a new collaboration called "Sweet Life," with a video to boot.

"It's a lot of Internet, a lot of online chatter going on — a lot of talk of this new Rick Ross/ John Legend collaboration," Ross said. "I'm confirming it. It's official. We got another record. ... Ah man, I don't know how to describe this one. 'Magnificent' was one of my favorite records off Deeper Than Rap. But the new John Legend [collaboration] is most definitely next-level vibe. We back at it. It's most definitely creative. Shout-out to John Legend — I think he makes a huge contribution to music. Myself, I try to get better and better with every rhyme I make — every rhyme I bring to the table, I want to make sure it's more potent than the last. I'm setting this album, Teflon Don, to be the album of my career."

Ross' record with Legend won't be released for a while, so the first song he wants to focus on is the sequel to his controversial "Mafia Music." "Always wanted a Rolls Royce with no job," he raps. "All I fear is a dope charge/ Tell me what's the odds of appeal for a dope boy?/ Who sheds tears for a dope boy?/ Or what happens to the kids of a dope boy?" " 'Mafia Music 2' is the first release from my album Teflon Don," he explained. "It's real exciting. A lot of people don't know Teflon Don was my original rap name — so it's coming back around full-circle. For me, it makes sense to come back with 'Mafia Music 2' because my hunger is the same from 'Mafia Music 1.' It's a new year."

Teflon Don is due to be released later this year.

John Legend Proud Of Involvement In 'hope For Haiti Now' (Added on Feb 2, 2009)

Singer-songwriter John Legend, who served as a presenter on the 52nd annual Grammy Awards on Sunday (January 31st), says he was happy to be part of the multi-network telethon Hope For Haiti Now. He explained what it was like to perform on the January 22nd all-star event: "Hope For Haiti Now I thought was a beautiful night and really well put together and I was very proud to be a part of it. And I thought the song that I did was very fitting for the sow and I felt very good about the preformance and what we were able to do that night. So it was an honor to be part of that."

Legend added that George Clooney and the producers specifically asked Legend to sing the Negro spiritual "(Sometimes I Feel Like A) Motherless Child" for the telethon. Legend said: "They did some research, they went on YouTube and found that song, 'cause I used to perform it years ago before I had a record deal. And I was surprised that they asked me to do that song because it wasn't out on one of my major albums, it was just on some earlier work that I did before I had a deal. And they found it and they said, 'We want you to do that song. And I was surprised but when they said it, it clicked, I was like 'Wow -- that would be perfect, actually.'"

The Hope For Haiti Now telecast raised some $57 million, while downloads of the collection of all performances raised the tally to more than $70 million and the CD debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200.
