Christmas and New Year's for John | Posted on December 27, 2005 by ewe

Rhythm and blues singer and musician John Legend, who has been basking in the success he enjoyed this past year of the eight nominations that he got in the Grammy Awards, spent Christmas at home with his family.
The singer told this writer, "I spent Christmas with my family in Ohio. As usual, we ate a lot of food and did a lot of singing around the piano. Sort of like track 13 on my album, It Don't Have To Change. I've never missed a Christmas with my family, and those are the kinds of traditions that help you keep your perspective," said Legend.
And how does he plan to ring in the New Year? "For New Year's Eve, I'll be performing at the House of Blues in Los Angeles. That's one of my favourite venues to play. I can't wait to do that," said Legend. John Legend is one of the headliners at the 2006 Air Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival which takes place in Montego Bay next month.

Hey people! Just wanted to remind you that there's only one day to John's 27th birthday! Don't forget to write something nice in our special B-DAY SECTION! ;) Tomorrow all your wishes will be sent to him.

A Legendary Year | Posted on December 22, 2005 by ewe

If you didn’t hear about the kind of year John Legend had, you must have been living in Slovakia. But even there, he’s sold 15 CDs.
In the past 12 months, the Springfield-raised R&B singer has proven, as Shakespeare once noted, all the world’s a stage. Then again, Shakespeare was never named one of “People” magazine’s 50 hottest bachelors.
With nearly 2.3 million in worldwide album sales, the 26-year-old Legend has had the kind of year some people only dream about. And it’s hard to believe it’s only been a year (come Wednesday) since Columbia Records issued his debut, “Get Lifted.”
In that time, the former John Stephens, a North High grad, has traveled far and wide to spread the news — that classic soul music is alive and well.
His efforts paid off earlier this month when he, Mariah Carey and Kanye West led the Grammy Award nominations with eight apiece. But, while he’s sold nearly 1.6 million copies of his debut in the United States, his success knows no borders. He went platinum in Great Britain, hit No. 1 in Norway and has sold more than 61,000 CDs in Japan. “Music transcends culture,” he told the News-Sun in April.
By the way, he’s also pretty big in the Netherlands (more than 39,000 copies sold), France (more than 38,000 copies sold) and South Africa (nearly 24,000 copies sold).
And, as of Dec. 14, 116 Hungarians were getting down to “Get Lifted.”
Of course, Legend remains most popular at home — as in Springfield.
A crowd of between 15,000 and 20,000 people packed Veterans Park in July to see him, and sales of “Get Lifted” at the Upper Valley Mall’s FYE have never been anything but, well, “through the roof,” as manager Matt Slone put it. “We always have to order more, all the time,” he said. “He’s holding his own right now.” Read whole here.

Legend enthralls sell-out South African crowd | Posted on December 21, 2005 by ewe

A day before he played to a sold-out crowd of 5,000, John Legend told a press conference that his eight Grammy nominations had not changed the energetic way he approached his live performances, "except that I will now probably be in a slighter better mood than my previous shows." Legend, playing in Africa for the first time as the headline act of MTV base's Live! concert, stood true to his words, performing -- and clearly, enjoying -- a lively 15-song set that sustained a feverish momentum and plainly revealed a man capable of keeping a crowd enthralled as easily as any of his (currently) better-known peers.
The fact that Legend's Johannesburg gig came on the eve of a long weekend, marking the start of the Christmas break for many, only added to the flat-out party atmosphere that drenched the Arena. But, the gold sales here (25,000 units) of his debut, "Get Lifted," confirm, this was a crowd of ardent Legend fans, word-perfect on all the songs from the disc that made it into the set. Recognizing that the crowd was here for the songs off "Get Lifted," Legend wasted no time in laying into the album's title track, giving the song a force at which its piano-based studio arrangement only hinted.
The authoritative way in which Legend delivered his opening numbers defined the rest of the night's show. It also gave life to the performer's intention to declare himself a standalone artist, deflecting any notions that he's simply Kanye West's protege. His potent solo versions of the songs off "Get Lifted" that feature collaborators, most especially "I Can Change" (Snoop Dogg), "Number One" (West) and the Grammy-nominated "So High" (Lauryn Hill), were so plump that it was a stretch to remember Legend had not recorded them on his own in the first place. Legend set to rock SA | Posted on December 14, 2005 by ewe

Neo-soul singer and pianist John Legend, who recently received eight Grammy nominations, spoke to me about the impact rapper Kanye West has had on his music career.
“He definitely had a lot to do with where I'm at right now. I got a lot of exposure because of him. He helped me break into the music industry,” Legend explained.
The pair met through John's college roommate and collaborator Devo Harris, who also happens to be Kanye's cousin. Legend's name was on the tip of everyone's tongue last year because of the success of his single Ordinary People. But he'd been doing plenty of music-related work way before then.
John sung on and co-wrote two tracks on Kanye's debut album, College Dropout; he provided vocals to Alicia Keys's single, You Don't Know My Name, from The Diary of Alicia Keys album; he also sung, co-wrote and played piano on the Kanye remix of If I Ain't Got You, from the same CD; played and sang in Encore and Lucifer, tracks from Jay-Z's The Black Album; was lead singer and co-writer of The Boogie That B track from the Black Eyed Peas' Elephunk album; played keyboards on Overnight Celebrity from Twista's Kamikaze CD; co-wrote and played on Janet Jackson's I want You, from the album Damita Joe; sung on I Try, the single featuring Mary J Blige from Talib Kweli's Beautiful Struggle album; sang lead vocals on Slum Village's track Selfish and he has done session work for Eve, Common and Britney Spears (the Kanye remix of Me Against The Music). Who Wants To Date A Legend? | Posted on December 12, 2005 by ewe

Gorgeous soul singer John Legend is a massive hit in the charts - but he has yet to find himself a proper girlfriend. The 26-year-old, who has just been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, reveals he's "young, free and single" and looking for love. And he would even consider falling for a fan - as long as she doesn't put him on a pedestal.
"It's off-putting when someone idolises me," he muses. "It wouldn't be the best in a relationship - the power dynamic would be all wrong." With his dark Caribbean looks and sparkling personality, it might seem that John could get any woman he wants.
But apparently not, because he's very choosy when it comes to his leading ladies.
John, in London filming Record of the Year, tells us: "I'm single and looking for love. I'm having fun - I'm 26, so that's too young to settle down.
"My longest relationship was seven months. It is partly because of the business and partly because of my personality. I'm picky and I like to move around. The fact I'm a touring musician is perfect for me because I get bored easily." So what exactly would it take to catch his roving eye?
"My ideal woman has to be smart, confident, sexy - which is about your attitude and how you look and carry yourself. She has to be a good person.
"Eventually I'm going to want to get married and have children, so I have to be with someone I feel good about raising my kids." Ahhh. "Hopefully, anyone I date likes my music, so if that qualifies as a fan then yeah, I would date a fan," John went on. "But there has to be an equity between us. They need to be successful in their own field and confident and they can't look up to me too much.

He's so sweet! <3

Legend Delighted By West's Nominations | Posted on December 12, 2005 by ewe

Soul singer John Legend is amazed he and mentor Kante West both have eight nominations for next year's (06) Grammy Awards, because the superstar rapper once supported him in a small New York City club when they were unknowns.
The Gifted singer called West as soon as the nominations were announced last week, and he is relieved they have not been selected in the same categories.
But Legend, who was brought to the attention of record labels by West in the wake of his breakthrough, is keen to point out that he was once a bigger draw than the Gold Digger star.
He says, "What people don't know is Kanye supported me at a New York club called SOBs in 2002, before he was famous.
"I had a nice fan base in New York, so I could sell out a club but nobody knew who Kanye was. He was cool. It was a funny night.
"Now both of us have been nominated for eight Grammys. It's amazing. When I found out I called Kanye straight away. I'm happy for him and he's happy for me.
"The cool thing is we aren't against each other in any group."

John Legend: I Wish | Posted on December 11, 2005 by ewe

In the January issue of VIBE, various artists were asked what they wished happened in 2005. Read the full transcript from our interviews with John Legend and T.I..

Complete this sentence: This year, I wish....
I wish I could fix everything. I read and watch the news and see so much pain and suffering going on around the world. It makes me want to come up with solutions for everybody. So I've been reading a lot, trying to come up with ideas for how I can be constructive and help alleviate people's pain.

What do you wish was different about American government?
Don't get me started. Just off the top of my head, I wish they would make a sincere commitment to reducing poverty. I wish it didn't take a hurricane for them to realize that the poor truly need help. I wish they would ensure that all of our children had access to quality education. I wish they would end the so-called "war on drugs." Prohibition almost never works. I wish they would come up with real solutions to deal with the energy crisis. We're not going to be able to live off of Saudi Arabian oil forever. I wish health care was universally available. I wish politicians truly governed with some sense of idealism and they actually cared about the public and not just about getting re-elected and consolidating their power.

What songs do you wish you had written this year? Or wish you had produced or worked on?
“Welcome to JamRock” - Damion "Junior Gong" Marley. “Drive Slow” - Kanye West featuring GLC and Paul Wall, “Oh” - Ciara featuring Ludacris, and “Extraordinary Machine” by Fiona Apple.

Which concerts do you wish you attended this year?
I've been trying to catch Coldplay this year, but I was always doing my own show whenever they were playing near me.

What places do you wish you performed at?
I don't know. I played all the places I wanted this year, either on my own or with Alicia Keys. I guess the only thing left is Madison Square Garden!

What hobbies do you wish you had more time to pursue?
I want to cook more. I haven't made myself a meal in months.

Reflect On Lennon's Musical Influence | Posted on December 10, 2005 by ewe

Sometimes it takes more than talent to be a successful musician. At Thursday's Grammy nominations ceremony some artists took time to reflect on who influenced them, including a music legend John Lennon. NY1's Rebecca Spitz filed the following report.
Each of the presenters at Thursday's Grammy nominations ceremony is a star in his or her own right, but all of them admit to being guided along their paths to fame.
R&B singer John Legend, up for 8-grammys this year - including one for a song he wrote, lists John Lennon among his musical idols. "He was truly an amazing contributor to popular music, and we were lucky to have him for as long as we did," says Legend.

8 GRAMMY NOMINATIONS FOR JOHN! | Posted on December 9, 2005 by ewe

Mariah Carey, Kanye West and John Legend lead this year's Grammy nominations with eight each. Carey calls the recognition "prayers answered." She says she's grateful that people are responding to the music she's made.

Beyonce Knowles, 50 Cent, Stevie Wonder, U2, Bruce Springsteen and Gwen Stefani are also multiple nominees. Paul McCartney says given that he's never won a Grammy after Wings, he's excited it might happen. McCartney is up for three Grammys, including album of the year for "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard." The Grammys will be handed out February eighth in Los Angeles.
John is nominated in following categories:
