Ashlee Simpson is right where she wants to be in life. Our favorite Simpson sister is engaged to Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. Her latest album, “Bittersweet World,” hits stores April 22 and, despite the implication of the CD's title, she has never been happier. Ashlee Simpson’s name has been everywhere for nearly a decade. From the notorious – “Saturday Night Live” lip-synching -- to the fabulous, her single "Outta My Head" serving as one of the most delicious dancefloor anthems in recent years, this superstar is simply getting started.

She's not just sticking to music, either. On April 22, the same day of her new album release, Ashlee is launching her own clothing line with Wet Seal. And, after a very visible courtship, the 23-year-old just announced her engagement to Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy.

After gracing the covers of magazines such as Rolling Stone and People, Ashlee Simpson sat down with SheKnows to share her views on beauty, celebrity, music and, of course, her style secrets.

SheKnows: After your last two records debuted at number one, did that put a lot of pressure on you in the recording process?

Ashlee Simpson: No, I didn't feel any pressure with this record. For me, I made the record that I wanted to make this time. It definitely puts less pressure on me, actually. Because I’ve already hit number one, I felt I could do what I wanted with this CD.

I wanted to make a fun record. I wanted to make a record people could dance to and I wanted to work with great creative people. I got to work with Chad Hugo from the Neptunes, Kenna, and Timbaland and his crew and this amazing writer that goes by Jim Beam. It was a group of cool, creative people. It was a great thing for me and I am really happy with the results.

SheKnows: I interviewed Kenna a few months ago, and he spoke highly of you. What was it about his music, background and expertise that drew you to him?

Ashlee Simpson: I think Kenna is so talented and creative. It was one of those things that was really meant to be. I thought he would completely understand me. That is sometimes hard to find. With this record, he could teach me something, I could teach him something (laughs) and we could learn from each other. His music is incredible. Read more.

Aaaah. I am back in LA after a long, but really fun promo tour. I loved meeting everyone out on the road, but it is so good to be back in my house (even though every light in the place was burned out-and you don't figure those things out until it is dark). I am doing international press today and they always ask the funniest questions. Ashlee xx

Ashlee Simpson has set an April 22 release date for her third Geffen album, "Bittersweet World," which, as previously reported, features production from Timbaland and the Neptunes' Chad Hugo.

The first official single, "Little Miss Obsessive," boasts guest vocals from the Plain White T's Tom Higginson. The track has yet to land on any Billboard charts.

Released digitally in December, album track "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," also failed to chart but has sold 117,000 digital downloads in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Simpson indulges her '80s fetish throughout the project. The sassy "Boys" imagines the Cardigans' "Lovefool" atop a Chic rhythm, and there's a "Beat It" vibe on the chugging "Rag Doll." "I almost wish I lived my 20s in the '80s," says Simpson, who was born in 1984. "A lot of the record is a bit cheeky. Sometimes I'm writing about something serious, but it was fun for me to kind of goof around as well."

Simpson put in a fair share of 14-hour days in the studio; often she'd leave at night and return the next morning to find that Hugo had crafted a song based on conversations from the previous day. "Everybody really had their hands in this album," she tells Billboard.

In recent weeks, Simpson has been busy with radio promo stops, in-store appearances at Wal-Mart and midnight club shows. Upcoming appearances include Nickelodeon's Kids Choice Awards on March 29, "Today" on April 18 and "Dancing With the Stars" on April 22. A summer tour is in the planning stages.

No longer the angst-ridden 20-year-old the world knew in 2004, Ashlee is back with a new album, "Bittersweet World," and a sweet new outlook on life. "I have great friends, great family, great boyfriend, great career and awesome fans," Jessica's lil' sis told "Extra."

Ash also dished on what she rarely speaks about -- her boyfriend, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz -- and Jessica's tabloid-fodder relationship with footballin' boyfriend Tony Romo.

Ashlee Simpson made a club-friendly turn with her Timbaland-produced single "Outta My Head (Ah Ya Ya)." But the singer is returning to rock with another new song, "Little Miss Obsessive," which she premiered on Chicago's KISS FM DreX Morning Show on Thursday. Starting over a mid-tempo piano line, the song opens up into a more rollicking chorus. "Little miss obsessive, can't get over it," Simpson sings. She duets with Tom Higgenson, the lead singer of Plain White T's, on the track. (Listen to the song here.)

Ashlee and Pete went very matchy-matchy at Mist in Phoenix on Wednesday night with their all black outfits, sneakers and flat ironed hair. It's Pete's turn to play groupie while Ash is hitting up various cities around the country for her mini promo tour. We shared some of our interview with Ashlee and now we've got even more from Ash. In the final segment of the interview, Ashlee talks about her life outside of the music realm, discussing her favorite designers, makeup secrets and fitness tips. She also revealed that she still has to get thinking about her Valentine's Day gift for Pete. Luckily, it looks like they've got pretty similar taste so it shouldn't be too hard.

PopSugar: We've watched you grow up — we watched you back in your reality days. What's it like for you to go back and watch that stuff? Is it something you regret? Is it something you would do again?
Ashlee Simpson: I wouldn't say it's something I would do again (laughs). Or I definitely wouldn't do a whole series again. But I definitely don't regret it. For me it's cool, because I can look back on that. It's when I got my record deal and everything. One day when I'm a grandma and have purple hair (laughs) I can show my grandchildren that... something like that is kinda cheesy but it's fun to think about.

PS: Who are some of your favorite designers?
AS: I love YSL — that's one of my favorites. And I like Miu Miu. I like Chloe and Marc Jacobs as well.

PS: Are you going to be going to Fashion Week?
AS: I think I'm going to be on the promo tour, but if I can make it out for a day then I definitely will go out for that.

PS: Who are some of your style icons?
AS: I love Debbie Harry — I think she's great. For me it's more about looking in certain magazines. I tear out sheets of everything I like... even random people. For me it's more about that instead of just one person's style.

PS: How would you describe your own personal style?
AS: I think that I always like something to be a little off, but on you know? Like I like to put a bright color... I definitely wear black a lot so I'm trying to experiment with brighter colors. In the day I'm very casual — I'm a tennis shoes kinda girl. But I think it's whatever I feel comfortable in that day. If I feel like getting dressed up that day then I'm going to get dressed up! Last week we had the amazing opportunity to chat with Ashlee Simpson who was really sweet and fun on the phone. She told us that she is headed back out on the road for her promo tour to showcase some new music from her upcoming album (check out the tour dates here). The singer also answered your questions about being on tour, what she's learned being a celebrity and more. While we love seeing Pete and Ashlee having fun on a rainy day double fisting coffee and walking adorable Hemingway, we're more excited we can follow it up with the answers to your questions separate from how proud she is of Pete for supporting Obama. We've already told you what she had to say about her new video, but check out more to see if your question and answer got picked after the jump.

PopSugar: When can we look forward to getting more music from the album?
Ashlee Simpson: I'm putting out a special on iTunes... so you'll hear one song from the record is on there... so you'll have the single on there and then another song, it's called Rule Breaker. As far as the record goes it's going to be out in late March and I'm so excited for everyone to hear. It's a fun dancing record and at the same time it's definitely quirky and I hope people will enjoy it. I always test it out with my friends. I start going on a promo tour (the end of this month). I'm going to be going to the clubs and a bunch of different cities with a deejay just performing some songs. Then after that I'll be on a real club tour with my band.

PS: We know you were going for the fun, upbeat sound with the new album and single. Wanted to do something your friends would dance to.
AS: Yeah. The place I was at when I was writing the record was definitely a fun, kinda quirky place. I worked with awesome people like Timbaland and Chad Hugo from the Neptunes — a bunch of really cool people. Everybody was so different and interesting in the room. It really created this interesting sound which I'm proud of and I hope people will enjoy. Read more?

March 2008 will see the release of Ashlee Simpson's third album "Bittersweet World", which she described to Cosmo Girl as a, "fun party album," that's, "silly and quirky". But what does Simpson listen to when she's throwing a party, and what does she do for fun or when she's feeling silly? Starpulse found out by asking the pop star herself, as well as what she thinks about the high standards of beauty set by the media and its affects on women everywhere.

You said in one interview that one thing you love about performing is seeing the joy in people's faces and seeing them sing along to your songs. But how about if it was you in the audience, singing along? What have been some of your favorite concerts that you've attended?
Gosh. There's been, obviously, some boring concerts. I saw the Killers and that was pretty great. I went with my girlfriends and we just danced around. That was a good time. Watching the Yeah Yeah Yeahs was awesome.

You've also been on some of these "hottest women in rock" sort of lists. How do you feel about this whole list idea in general?
Everybody has their own opinion, right? To be a part of it is awesome. But everybody has their own opinion.

What is beautiful to you?
A good personality. Style. Somebody that is so interesting that they just glow.

A lot of women today seem to be bombarded with images of unattainable beauty, from magazines, to television, to the Internet. It gives rise to a lot of negative emotions and self-perceptions. What do you have to say to girls and women who aren't able to meet that sort of standard of beauty but who still feel the pressure to try to meet and the effects of being unable to?
Standards are a little crazy these days. I think that, when you go to sleep, as long as you're happy with the way you are and the way you look, that's the most important thing. I think it's an internal thing. As long as you feel good with who you are and comfortable with what you're wearing, but not if that's the most important thing. Read more?

Ashlee Simpson will release a three-song digital EP on February 4th, 2008! The EP includes two new songs, Outta My Head (AY YA YA)" and "Rule Breaker" from her upcoming album plus "Catch Me When I Fall", a hidden gem from her last album.

  News: January 16, 2008
Ashlee Simpson is in a good place. She has two multi-platinum records that debuted back to back at the top of the charts and collectively sold more than four million copies in the U.S. alone. She has two sold-out tours under her belt, a tight-knit family, a loyal fan base, and a burgeoning second career as an actress. So when it came time to create her third album, she wanted the music to represent where she was at in life.

"Life is really good right now. I'm young. I love my life and I enjoy my time off too. I wanted to celebrate all that on my next record. I wanted to make music people could shake their booties to and use beats for the first time. I wanted to sing fun songs. Basically, I wanted to make a party record."

Ashlee teamed up with power producer Timbaland on her new single "Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" making it destined for dance-floor anthem status. The track immediately rocketed to the Top 20 pop singles on iTunes and received its TRL debut. The video for the hauntingly catchy song takes your imagination on a wild ride through a dreamlike world of surrealism.

When an artist wants to get the party started, who better to call than Timbaland? The producing powerhouse, who helped shape recent smash hits by Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, toiled on half of the tracks on Ashlee's upcoming release, tentatively titled Bittersweet World. He lent his expertise on "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," "Murder," "Can't Have It All," and "Rulebreaker" while the rest were guided by the Neptunes' Chad Hugo and critically acclaimed Ethiopian synth-hop savant Kenna.

Ashlee explains, "The room was so blessed with talent. I was very lucky to work with people who are at the top of their game". She quickly learned that hip-hop heroes move at a different pace than pop stars. "I have never worked until 4 a.m. before. I wouldn't go in until late in the afternoon and then we'd work until the wee hours of morning if we had it in us. I started bringing a blanket with me. I got a little loopy and punchy late at night, which affected some of the songs. It was so cool for me to be able to step outside of the way I had always done it before and try new things."

More help came courtesy of Travis McCoy, the frontman of Gym Class Heroes, who raps on "Murder." The two run in similar circles and she's a big fan of his MC skills. "The band's so huge now and he's so busy that he had to send me his part from overseas. I was happy he made the time because he just gets me and it completed the song." Don't let the somber title fool you. The 23-year-old has not gone gangsta. "No, it isn't serious, based on a true story or a threat," she explains laughing. "It's a metaphor about a girl who can get away with murder because of who she is".

She also touches on the cattiness of girls on "Hot Stuff," a coquette-ish sassiness on "Boys" and how fun it is to sometimes do the wrong thing on "Rulebreaker." She was trying "to capture that badass feeling you get sometimes after watching a movie like True Romance. You think you can take on the world and you want to color outside the lines and get a tattoo or mouth off to someone way bigger than you." Her personal favorite is the slow jam "Never Dream Alone," because "it is a sweet emotional song that has been stripped down to piano, strings and vocals." Read more.

Note to Pete Wentz: If you don't want to know what your girlfriend got you for Christmas, stop reading now ...

Seriously, we're warning you. You don't wanna ruin the surprise. Because this gift is awesome. You have a great girlfriend, man.

On Tuesday, MTV News sat down with Ashlee Simpson to talk about her upcoming album. And while she did give us a bunch of scoops on what she has decided to call the album and who she worked with on it, we figured we would lead off with what she plans to get her boyfriend, Fall Out Boy bassist Wentz, for Christmas. "I can't tell, because what if this comes out early or before I give him the gift?" she laughed. "It's a big present ... [with] two [wheels] ... I bought him a plane."

We're only, like, 50 percent sure she's joking about the plane thing, which would probably be the best Christmas present ever (that or the Sega Master System we got in the watershed Xmas of '86). But whatever she ends up getting for Wentz, it will be good, because, as it turns out, Simpson is in a very giving mood these days.

After all, she's just released the video for "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," a prime slab of Timbaland-produced, overly caffeinated super-pop, and now she's starting to talk about her collabo-heavy album (it features work by Chad Hugo, Kenna, J Roe and King Logan, to name just a few). And, first things first, she has decided to give us the exclusive on what she's gonna call it. "I had been thinking about it, but then I guess today I just decided that I'm gonna call my album Bittersweet World," she said. "It's the title of one of the songs on my record. I was contemplating Color Outside the Lines for a while, but Bittersweet World is the one I feel. ... It's kind of how I feel about the world right now."

Bittersweet is tentatively scheduled to hit stores in March, and when fans finally get a listen, Simpson said they'll be hearing something that's equal parts "cheeky, quirky and sweet," an album that reflects her life in the spotlight ("Out Of My Head" is about "having so many voices in your head and everybody's opinions") and her growth as a person. And it sounds like it was recorded in 1985.

"It's definitely influenced by '80s music," she said. "I wanted to do music with beats, I wanted to step outside the box. It's where I am in my life. There's parts of the record that are '80s-influenced, because that's just kind of where I'm at right now. I'm more laid-back, and I want to dance around, and I kind of laugh at things a lot, so you'll hear that on the record."

And as is the case with pretty much everything Simpson does, Bittersweet has already been the subject of much gossip: First, it was the rumors that none other than Robert Smith, morose and made-up frontman of the Cure, was helping write songs for the record (note: not true). Then, there was talk that the album would see her rolling out an alter ego named Vicky Valentine (also not true). And finally, there was news that Wentz himself was contributing songs, which — you guessed it — also turned out to be false.

So how does she feel about having so much speculation about an album that won't be released for three months? Well, she's trying as best she can to laugh it all off, which is about all she can do, really.

"Honestly, it is more about having a good time and laughing at yourself and laughing at things you do, or making a silly comment and turning it into a song," she said. "I mean, sometimes things are serious. ... Who knows? My next record, what if I do a metal record? It goes with how you are and where you're at in a time in your life. And right now, I'm at an easygoing, fun, loving time."

Ashlee Simpson: pop star, celebrity girlfriend, devoted sister ... mental patient? That's right – the youngest Simpson sister dons a straitjacket in an arty new video that debuted Wednesday.

After spending the last year quietly recording her third album and tagging along on boyfriend Pete Wentz's band Fall Out Boy's tour, Simpson, 23, sat down with PEOPLE on the set of her video for her Timbaland-produced single "Outta My Head (Ah Ya Ya)."

"I went to [Salvador] Dali's museum in Paris and was really inspired by the surrealism," she explains on the second day of the Burbank, Calif., shoot. "I wanted to do an ambitious video [where] you basically go into another world and never know what's real. I am five different people in the video. The real me is in therapy and then it all turns into a painting. For me it's like an art piece. Its fun to do all of the crazy hair and make-up changes and different characters."

Reminiscent of Madonna's '80s hit "Burnin Up." Simpson's looks in the video are all over the place– from a mental patient to a computer-generated head. She even revisits her old self: "There will be a black wig in [the video]. Going back to the old, dark haired me," she laughs. "That's the great thing about doing videos – you get to go into whatever world you want."

The track is Simpson's "leave me alone" anthem. "The song is basically everybody's opinions and voices and it's like 'get out of my head!' You have to have your own creativity and place," she explains. "Some people get it from a guy or mom. At the end of the day you're like 'Ahhh! Everybody stop!' "

Like Britney Spears in her new "Piece of Me" video, Simpson also goes on the run from the press. "I'm being chased by paparazzi, and whatever [else] that's chasing her in her head. She's basically on the run."

As for the rest of Simpson's as-yet-untitled album, due in March, "My record is about having a good time. It's not too serious or anything," she says. "There's a bit of cheekiness. It's more about having fun."

  News: December 12, 2007
Has Ashlee Simpson completely lost it? In the singer's video for "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," which she shot last week with director Alan Ferguson, she goes from talk therapy to straitjackets in short order, and she's literally bouncing off the walls. "It's probably the weirdest video I've seen of hers," her boyfriend Pete Wentz, who was on set, told MTV News. "It's like a Salvador Dalí painting meets 'Being John Malkovich.' She just went to this weird place for it. It has this kind of multiple personality, like the song does."

In the video, Ashlee hears voices — though they aren't in her head; they're the voices of her family, record executives, fans, haters and the media. The opinion overload is driving her crazy, so, according to the video's treatment, she seeks counseling. But her therapist, played by the song's producer, Timbaland, hasn't mastered the art of listening. He interrupts her in a strange drone that makes him sound like the teacher from Charlie Brown cartoons. From there, things just get worse. As the song's beat kicks in, the therapist's office walls melt, and Ashlee finds herself in the middle of a surrealistic landscape, with clouds moving in reverse, melting clocks going backward and a giant Rubik's cube trying to solve itself in the sky. Timbo, now looking like Sigmund Freud, asks, "Am I getting on your nerves?" A chattering mob — including media members with cameras and tape recorders for heads — is closing in, so Ashlee runs away, only to stumble on the massive head of a statue, which looks a lot like her. The head opens its eyes and sings, "What, is that all you got to say? What, what, you're rubbing me the wrong way."

Seeing a freestanding doorway on the horizon, Ashlee runs through it, slams the door and finds herself in a futuristic recording studio where the instruments play themselves, just like in Herbie Hancock's "Rocket" video. Timbaland is behind the mixing board, so Ashlee relaxes for a moment and steps into the booth to sing the first verse. But her respite is soon over, as people come in and start to flood both Ashlee and Tim with their questions and points of view. Ashlee attacks one executive with a mic stand, but when he falls, he splinters into dozens of tiny versions of himself, and the singer faints at the sight. When she wakes, she finds herself bound to the studio floor by cables, as if she's now caught in "Gulliver's Travels" and everyone else has been shrunk down to Lilliputian size. She breaks free, sending the tiny people flying, and when she sits up, she's seemingly safe in her own bedroom. But when she opens the door, it looks like a music video is being shot in the hallway, by a director who has a motion-picture camera for a head. He yells, "Action!" and a puzzled Ashlee sees her spitting image (dressed like Missing Persons' Dale Bozzio) get up and sing, "Ay Ya Ya!" But when she gets to the lyric where she orders people to "Get outta my head," the fake Ashlee collapses. The real Ashlee gasps, causing everyone to notice her. She runs for the studio door, only to find herself back in surreal land, where even her own body doesn't look real anymore.

Defending herself with parts of the melting clock, Ashlee is captured by two men in white with a padded wagon, who put her in a padded room and a straitjacket. She springs from the floor and sticks high on the walls, leaping and sticking to opposite walls as the attendants try to reach her, until ultimately, she's hanging upside down. Her chaperoned visitors and the attendants are finally speechless.

Ashlee Simpson spent yesterday (Dec. 6) shooting the video for "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)," the first single from her third studio album. The as-yet-untitled set is due in March via Geffen. Asked to describe the video, Simpson tells Billboard.com, "One of my favorite artists is Salvador Dali. You'll see a little bit of that surrealism in it. There's a bit of 'Being John Malkovich' in there too. It's a little out there," she says with a laugh.

"Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)" goes to iTunes and other leading digital retailers on Tuesday. Like a good percentage of the new album, it was produced by Timbaland, who tapped into Simpson's love of '80s music when crafting the material. "There's definitely influences here and there from it, but it's definitely not a full-on '80s record," Simpson says. "There's a pop/rock element as well," she notes, pointing to songs like "Never Dream Alone" and the sassy "Rulebreaker." Elsewhere, "Murder" will feature a rap from Gym Class Heroes member Travis McCoy.

"I've never gone into a room and worked with somebody who puts a beat on and you start going," says Simpson, who also worked in the studio with Kenna and the Neptunes' Chad Hugo. "It felt like somewhere to go with the record where I'd never been." Simpson plans to decide the album title over the holiday break, but is already looking toward her return to the live stage. "I want to do like a smaller club tour first," she says. "Probably around February, we'll be back."

The Cure's Robert Smith addressed rumors about him working with Ashlee Simpson in V magazine. "First of all, I was mostly shocked by how fantastically widespread that rumor was ... and by how quickly it spread," he said. "I know that people were really upset by the idea that I would do that and I suppose I can understand why, but it still seems so ridiculous to me. I took my nieces to see her perform in 'Chicago' on the West End and afterward they wanted to meet her, so we went backstage and said hello. I didn't understand what the big deal was. You can say what you want about her, but she can sing. Whether or not we'd actually do anything together, I don't know. I didn't see any reason to deny the rumor as I thought it was amusing and I never deny rumors anyway. There are a handful of singers that I'd rather pull my own fingernails out than be stuck in the same room with, but she isn't really one of them. We have no plans to collaborate, though. Believe it or not, she and I don't really run into each other. [He laughed.] Now, wait a second ... Ashlee is calling on my other line and I should probably take it."

"Right now, the record's done," Simpson told MTV News, "but I'm one [of those types where] I like to continue to write, write, write. [The album is slated for release] in March, and the single is in January."

The first single, for which she's shooting the video in December, is the Timbaland-produced "Out of My Head (Ay Ya Ya)." It's a song that her father Joe previously joked was about Ashlee's mom, Tina, though Ashlee explained it was about everyone in her life. "It's about too many voices, too many people having their own opinion," she said, "so it's not necessarily about my mom. I love my mom there's no sides here and my dad gets to hear me say all the sweetest things about him. It's mainly a fun, dancey song. I think it's got a little bit of an '80s feel to it, too you'll hear that in it. But at the same time, it's Timbaland."

LAS VEGAS — This town can bring out the bad girl in just about anyone, and Ashlee Simpson is about to unleash hers — on her new album, that is. Get ready to meet ... Vicky Valentine.

"You will know when Vicky is in the room!" the singer laughs during a Saturday sneak peek of select tracks from her forthcoming, yet-untitled album, due in November. Hanging out at the recording studio on the third floor of the Fantasy Tower at the Palms Casino Resort, Simpson has her recording crew keeping her company, from Timbaland — who pops by for a hug — to Jim Beanz, J Roe and King Logan. "These are my boys," she says as an introduction.

Meanwhile, a new sound from Ashlee is banging on the speakers, a more tribal, dangerous, seductive sound, filled with beats and synth lines. "Here, in the dark, is where I find the light," she sings, in a slow, slinky way. "I've got a monkey on my back, get it off," she then sings in a near-rap. "I get away with murder," she drawls. Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes sneaks in a rap about how she has "diplomatic immunity."

"This is really fun for me," Ashlee says. "I've always done guitar-based songs, and seeing what we can do with beats is so amazing."

The song is called "Murder," and it might be her first single. It's one of six songs she recorded in Los Angeles over the past few months with VMA maestro Timbaland and crew, while she has seven others completed with Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and Kenna. The Timbo tracks — the ones she previews at the Palms, at least — make it sound like a reinvention (à la what the producer did for Nelly Furtado) is in the works. One non-Timbaland track, "Follow You Wherever You Go," is what her father Joe calls her "Broadway thing" — a jazzed-up number inspired by her work in the West End production of "Chicago" (see "Ashlee Collapses Onstage At 'Chicago' Debut — But This Time, It's Intentional"). Ashlee might call her alter ego Vicky, but there's a bit of Roxie in her now too.

"There is definitely a different element on the record," Simpson. "I have a pretty low voice, so I got to touch in with that, [and I've been inspired by] doing 'Chicago.' ... I think there's a part of every girl and guy who wants to get out and get away with things."

Don't ask her what she's getting away with during her time in Vegas — "My dad is in the room!" she exclaims. So while she'll let out her rebellious side on the record — as in songs like "Rulebreaker" — she doesn't want to incriminate herself just yet. "Rulebreaker" does that for her a bit: "I like to break rules, get tattoos, scratch things. ... I'm a black sheep." It's a Vicky song, and Ashlee says, "She's tough. You don't want to mess with her."

Apparently, Ashlee feels like she's been messed with enough as it is — "Ay Ay Ay" is her get-out-of-my-head track, while "Ragdoll" tells off a lover for mistreating her. "Our love must be tainted," she sings, "if that's how you paint it. ... Don't you see my black tears?" Sometimes, though, she sounds like she likes it — telling her would-be suitor, "You can touch me now/ Toss me up." Avid poker player Joe interjects repeatedly that "Ay Ay Ay" is about Tina, Ashlee's mom, but she's having none of it. "It's about you too, all right?" she teases Joe.

"It's not about my mom," she later clarifies. "I just have too many voices in my head, everyone having their own opinion. And while I have a sweet side, a soft side, sometimes you just want to kick some ass, too."

We had a back-to-school makeover with Ashlee Simpson in honor of her GORGEOUS September cover! Her friend and hair stylist Ken Paves hosted it in his salon and ten Seventeen readers were treated to hair and makeup makeovers.

Ken is the king of hair extensions you've seen the ads with Jessica Simpson for their "HairDo" line of clip-in hair pieces, right? Well, a bunch of girls got amazing LONG locks. I really liked the makeup: One girl got the coolest green eyeliner and another got very juicy pink lips! But the best part was when Ashlee played her new music. And when the chorus of the song came on, her mom started singing back-up over the CD recording! You are going to love this song it's about a girl who is itching for a fight.

Sources tell 24Sizzler.com that Ashlee Simpson is busily working in the recording studio on her upcoming album slated for release in the fall. Among the musical heavyweights Ashlee, who’s still dating Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz, is working with, are Timbaland and John Legend. “She’s using this opportunity to try different things out,” a source tells 24Sizzler.com, adding that there’s no distinct sound for the Geffen Records album yet. “She’s opening up herself to trying new things.”

The source adds that Ashlee has not yet shot the CD cover or any promotional photos. “She has to wait until more of the album is done, so she knows the feel of the music and the album.” So, there’s no word yet on the look or image Ashlee will don for the album. Ashlee’s new album, though, will be her first cover that features her post-rhinoplasty nose. Also, says the source, it’s likely Ashlee will go on tour to support the album.

Speaking of Ashlee, you might not want to wait around for that supposed Robert Smith collabo she's been raving about. "I would be hugely surprised if I end up working with Ashlee this year, but I haven't ruled it out," he told Billboard.com. He added: "I went to see her in 'Chicago.' ... I was impressed. The fact is, when she got onstage and sang, she was really good."

Little did I realize how much I have in common with Ashlee Simpson! For one thing, we're both big fans of Pete Wentz. For another, we'd much rather be at the beach than anywhere else, like a recording studio (in her case) or in an office (in mine). For a third, well... I guess there isn't a third example but as someone once sang: Two out of three ain't bad.

I met Ashlee for the first time at the Sony/BMG Grammy party, where she took a break from dancing with her sister Jessica so that we could talk about our mutual love of the ocean. As you can see in our new July issue, Ash chose a gorgeous stretch of sand in Malibu as the backdrop for our photo shoot. "I've always been inspired by the beach," she told me. "And I just love Malibu. I manage to find a little spot where I can be all alone. It's a good place for me to go and clear my head. If I have, you know, a love problemor any kind of problemI go there so that I'm able to write about it." If she could pick her favorite sandy spot on earth? "I would be in Hawaii," she said. "Hopefullyone daythat's where I'll retire."

But Ash was definitely in work mode when we spoke on the phone a few weeks ago. She's been recording nonstop and she's really excited about the songs she's written for her new album, which is due out this fall. "I come from a spiritual background, so there are a few songs about my journey with that" she revealed. "But there are also some fun dance songs as well. And I always come from, like, a 'woman empowerment' kind of place, so there are still those songs too. But for the first time you will hear the side of me that is a spiritual person." "It's my third record, and I’m trying to step out on a limb," Ash added. "I'm taking chances and just being honest about how I'm feeling. I've grown up a lot and I think I’ve grown as a writer. But I take life as it comes and, you know, I do try to look at it from a lighter perspective."

Pete Wentz Denies Working With Ashlee: 'I Want No Part In Selling A Relationship'. Hey, you know those reports about Pete Wentz working with his girlfriend, Ashlee Simpson, on her upcoming album? Well, they're not true. So sayeth Wentz himself, who took time out from the Honda Civic Tour to set the record straight about the rumors, an activity which is — rather unfortunately — becoming a near-daily ritual for the Fall Out Boy bassist. "That's pretty much the silliest recent rumor I have read," Wentz told MTV News in an e-mail. "Mostly [because] I want no part in selling a relationship. I mean, it is not true. She hasn't really played me any of [her album]. I heard part of a demo that I liked, though. "I mean, reports getting out are a bummer when they are absolutely not true. But at the same time you have to understand that this is part of the territory."

It's territory Wentz has been exploring for more than a year now, roughly ever since some, er, intimate photos of his body leaked onto the Internet back in March, 2006 (see " Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz Comments On ... You Know, Those Photos "). But since he started dating Simpson, things have really gone haywire (see "Pete Wentz's Bar Draws Jay-Z, Ashlee"). Not a day goes by that he's not featured on some or other gossip site — a trend he's not exactly actively defusing, mind you, but at this point he feels things have moved from beyond ridiculous to pretty hilarious. "I don't care much what people say about me, but I do care how it affects the rest of my band," Wentz wrote. "I guess I'm just happy with aspects of my life that I haven't been [happy with] in years, and I don't feel like I should feel guilty for that. Sometimes, the rumors are laughable though."

OK, so if he's not working on Simpson's new disc, what is on Wentz's plate? Well, perhaps not content to lord over a burgeoning empire that already includes platinum records, sold-out tours, Web sites, a clothing line and a bar, he's turned his attention to screenwriting, working on a semi-secret story with FOB frontman Patrick Stump. "Patrick and I have been writing new FOB songs and working on a big project. We are writing a story that we kind of want to end up animated. Not too sure on whether it will ever go or how much of a 'Hollywood' project it would be," he wrote. "But it is kind of a narrative that seems to be nonexistent in recent animated stories." And the news doesn't stop there ... Wentz and company recently shot a video for "The Take Over, The Breaks Over," which they plan on premiering soon. After all, as the past year has shown us, there's never a dull moment in Fall Out Boy land. "The new video is way more low-key then our past ones, one-day shoot and all," Wentz wrote. "Think 'The Science of Sleep' meets 'The Dog Whisperer.' I think it'll end up on the Internet soon."

Ashlee Simpson is taking her romance with Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz to a place it's never been before - the recording studio. Ashlee, 22, spent the weekend of April 21 working on her new album and, according to one of her pals, secretly recorded a song with Pete, 27, that she's hoping to include on her CD, which comes out later this year. "She wasn't planning on doing a song with Pete, but asked him at the last minute and he said yes," her friend says.

"I think she's really gonna surprise people on this. She's been underestimated."

Ever since he showed up for her last "Chicago" performance in London's West End, Ashlee Simpson has said she's dying to work with Robert Smith of the Cure — but he's not the only name on the list of collaborators for her third album. The singer has been hard at work writing songs with Timbaland, John Legend, Kenna, and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, a source close to the project told MTV News. If that list sounds unusual to you, it should — Ashlee is going for a more "soulful" sound on her new album, she told Cosmopolitan for the mag's June cover story, and has been listening to a lot of India.Arie, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple for inspiration. "This record is not like, 'I didn't steal your boyfriend' or anything like that," she told Cosmo. "But who knows what's going to happen in the next few months. I'll probably have my heart broken and then end up with one of those kinds of songs on there." Don't count on it, though. "I'm in a stronger place now," Simpson insisted. "I'm coming into my womanhood, and it's changing my music."

Pop singer Ashlee Simpson's new album will include a duet with the front man of eighties group The Cure! Simpson will collaborate with singer Robert Smith for the as yet untitled album, an unlikely pairing. Apparently Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz is the brains behind the idea. Wentz, who is rumoured to have been dating Ashlee, denies his association with the duet. "I doubt I had anything to do with it, because they were friends since she was performing in 'Chicago'", he told a US magazine. "But I definitely only have good things to say about Ashlee - I think the collaboration could be great." Ash is also working with Tim Rice-Oxley from Keane, John Legend, and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes. Should make for a very different album from Ashlee!

What happens in Austin, stays in Austin? Not when it's new-album news about Ashlee Simpson, straight from the horse's mouth! (Or, more accurately, the mouth of the horse's dad-slash-manager). At a late-night SXSW showcase by Ethiopian-born alt-pop artist Kenna, two of EW's intrepid reporters spotted Simpson père Joe, who filled us in on his daughter's plans for her upcoming 2007 release. The album involves Kenna (whose own album is due this June) and his buddy and producer Chad Hugo — a.k.a., the member of production über-duo the Neptunes who is not Pharrell Williams. Mr. Simpson tells us Ashlee, Chad, and Kenna were in the studio writing songs earlier this month, and that she's also working with Timbaland, John Legend, and Tim Rice-Oxley of Brit sensations Keane, who teamed up with Gwen Stefani on ''Lonely Winter,'' one of the strongest, most reflective tracks on her recent Sweet Escape album. The bigger shocker? Ashlee's also reportedly collaborating with Robert Smith. Yes, as in the legendary frontman of Alternative Nation icons the Cure. Could their mutual buddy, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, be the connection? When asked by our west-coast counterpart Shirley Halperin, Wentz demurred. ''I doubt I had anything to do with it, 'cause they were friends since she was performing in Chicago [in London last year]. But I definitely only have good things to say about Ash — I think the collaboration could be great!'' Indeed; whatever these two Lovecats come up with, it's bound to be interesting!

Ashlee Simpson, busy writing her next album, said fans should expect a more soulful sound. "I'm from Texas, I come from that background," she said. "It's cool because on my last two records I was writing with the same people and now I'm writing with a bunch of different people. I'm writing with my guitar player Ray [Brady] and just seeing where it goes." Simpson is eyeing an October release.
