ETTA JAMES WEIGHS IN ON BEYONCE ROLE
Posted on 25 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Etta James, the legendary soul singer to be portrayed by Beyonce in the upcoming film "Cadillac Records," recently spoke about how pleased she is with the casting choice. "It's a privilege and an honor to have somebody like that girl. I don't think she looks like me, but that's all right. They can fix that up," Etta told PageSix.com. But moving beyond looks, James warns: "Oh my god, she's going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel!" For one, James says Beyonce will have to make some changes to her singing style. "I have my own way of putting those songs over, and I was just wondering if Beyoncé could, and my son said, 'They're thinking about how she looks, but Mama, she can really sing.'" "I kinda have a man's voice. It's a contralto, more bluesy, religious. I would really like to work with her on that," the 70-year-old songstress adds. Etta, who battled heroin addiction for many years, says, "I can tell Beyoncé some things; some of the things I might not tell her. "I wasn't as bougie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that... I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her." As previously reported, "Cadillac Records" will star Adrien Brody in the role of music exec Leonard Chess, as well as Cedric the Entertainer and Jeffrey Wright. Shooting is scheduled to start on March 10 in New Jersey, with two days on location in Mississippi.

CANADIAN ACTRESS WANTS TO BE LIKE BEYONCE
Posted on 25 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Suzanne Bastien had a guilty pleasure. The Vancouver actress became obsessed with a website dedicated to Beyonce Knowles, particularly the "candids" section. After all, she reasoned, she and the famed Bootylicious singer had the same body type. So if Beyonce could wear a certain outfit, then so could Bastien. But she soon became taken with the way the impeccably dressed and groomed star remains calm and pleasant amidst the near-constant swarm of fans and paparazzi who follow her. "I just thought, 'what a life.' She obviously doesn't hate it. You never see her with her hand up to the camera," says Bastien. "I thought, 'I want to be that! I want to be in the middle of all the hecticness like that! "

WILL.I.AM READYING 2ND BARACK OBAMA VIDEO - POSSIBLY WITH BEYONCE'S HELP
Posted on 22 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Two weeks after Barack Obama delivered his "Yes We Can" speech in Nashua, New Hampshire, the Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am assembled an all-star cast of musicians and actors (including Common, John Legend and Scarlett Johansson) to appear on his "remix" of the speech and the accompanying video, an arty, black-and-white clip that quickly became a YouTube sensation, racking up more than 4 million views. Now, two weeks after Obama delivered another speech — this one from his hometown of Chicago, after a triumphant Super Tuesday in which he won 14 states — Will is at it again, booking time in a Los Angeles studio to record yet another pro-Obama tune. "Right now, since we're in the early stages, I think the song is gonna be called 'We Are the Ones.' It's inspired by a line in his speech after Super Tuesday, when he was in Chicago: 'We are the ones we have been waiting for,' " he told MTV News. "It lit another inspirational fire in me when he said that in his speech. So I decided to get to work on another track. We're lining up people to appear on it right now, and that's the easy part, because people are just passionate to want to be a part of it. There's no casting ... the inspiration is the casting director." So far comedians/actors George Lopez and John Leguizamo have recorded spoken parts for the track, and a publicist for the project told MTV News Jessica Alba, Ryan Phillippe, Ben McKenzie, Macy Gray and the Black Eyed Peas' Tabu are slated to participate. And rumor has it that Beyoncé is trying to clear up her schedule to make an appearance too. The whole thing is coming together with a spur-of-the-moment kind of feel (in the studio, Will was collaborating with a New York-based percussionist via online chat service Skype), and it looks like that's the way it'll be until the song is finished.

ETTA IS GOING TO TEACH BEYONCE A THING OR TWO
Posted on 22 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Beyoncé is going to have the best coach in the biz when she takes on the role of Etta James in Cadillac Records, a forthcoming movie about Etta's life. The legendary singer tells PageSix.com exclusively that she's going to be advising the "Bootylicious" star herself. "It's a privilege and an honor to have somebody like that girl. I don't think she looks like me, but that's all right. They can fix that up," Etta tells us. And appearance isn't all Beyoncé will have to work on. "Oh my god, she's going to have a hill to climb, because Etta James ain't been no angel!" she says. Producers have informed Etta that she'll get the chance to consult with the 26-year-old Destiny's Child star, giving her pointers on both the acting and the singing — the latter being something the "At Last" singer was most concerned with when she got wind of the casting. Of her many hits, Etta feels, "I have my own way of putting those songs over, and I was just wondering if Beyoncé could, and my son said, 'They're thinking about how she looks, but mama, she can really sing!'" It was the Dreamgirls star's performance at the Grammys earlier this month that won Etta over, when Jay-Z's main squeeze rocked "Proud Mary" with Tina Turner."I kinda have a man's voice. It's a contralto, more bluesy, religious. I would really like to work with her on that," the 70-year-old songstress says. Of her life lessons, Etta, who battled heroin addiction for many years, says, "I can tell Beyoncé some things; some of the things I might not tell her." She does stress that the emotional transformation Beyoncé must undergo will have to be a little intense. "I wasn't as bourgie as she is, she's bourgeois. She knows how to be a lady, she's like a model. I wasn't like that... I smoked in the bathroom in school, I was kinda arrogant, so those are some of the things I would want to tell her." The flick will co-star Adrien Brody (reportedly replacing Matt Damon) in the role of music exec Leonard Chess, as well as Cedric the Entertainer and Jeffrey Wright. The meeting between the divas will be happening soon, as sources tell us filming is scheduled to start on March 10 in New Jersey, with two days on location in Mississippi.

Posted on 22 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Beyonce is to star as blues legend Etta James in a new film about the 50s record label Chess. The singer will play James, most famous for her hit 'I Just Want To Make Love To You', in 'Cadillac Records'. Beyonce will also record four songs for the film’s soundtrack, donating a portion of her royalties to the Survivor Foundation, a charity for recovering addicts. Oscar winner Adrien Brody is also set to star as Leonard Chess, the label's founder, while other musicians portrayed in the film are set to include Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry. Beyonce has previously starred in films including 'Dreamgirls', 'Austin Powers In Goldmember' and 'The Fighting Temptations'.

TINA HAS BETTER LEGS, SAYS BEYONCE
Posted on 17 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Beyonce is still talking about her memorable performance with Tina Turner at last weekend's Grammy Awards ceremony. And that includes the 68-year-old legend's sleek set of pins! "You can't compare my legs to Tina's - no!" Beyonce told Extra. "Tina's legs at 68 look better than mine at 26." "I was beyond nervous. I was so nervous I couldn't even hide it," she added about her performance. "So I just had to scream and jump up and down." And despite the fact that Beyonce has sold millions of records and won a multitude of awards, her mum Tina Knowles has her own advice for what keeps her daughter grounded. "Smack 'em around every once in a while," she joked. "No, not really. I'm not an expert on it - I just did a lot of praying." Extra spoke to Tina and Beyonce as they prepared to unveil their new autumn line from their House of Dereon fashion label. "We have hosiery, we have lingerie, our bags are sick and our shoes are crazy," smiled Beyonce.

BEYONCE'S DAD WEIGHS IN ON "QUEEN" FLAP
Posted on 15 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Beyonce's father says Aretha Franklin's criticism of his daughter for referring to Tina Turner as "the Queen" at the Grammys is "ridiculous." On Tuesday, the Queen of Soul let everyone know her royal feathers were ruffled when Beyonce called Turner "The Queen" before their joint performance Sunday at the Grammys. Franklin, who also performed at the ceremony, was sitting in the audience: Beyonce did reference her along with other top female singers before introducing Turner. "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce," Franklin said in a statement issued by her publicist. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy." However, in an interview with CelebTV.com posted Wednesday, Matthew Knowles, Beyonce's father and manager, said: "I am not taking something this ridiculous to Beyonce. Beyonce referred to Tina Turner as a 'queen.' Not queen of gospel, queen of soul, queen of blues, Queen of England. I consider my wife a queen and sometimes call her that. Does Aretha have a problem with that?" Beyonce's representative did not respond to a request from The Associated Press seeking comment. An e-mail request for comment from Franklin's representative was not immediately returned. However, in her statement on Tuesday, Franklin made clear she wasn't holding a grudge toward Beyonce, ending her statement by giving the Grammys thanks and "love to Beyonce anyway."

CHOCOLATE DAY FOR HUNGRY BEYONCE
Posted on 15 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Beyonce Knowles was spending St. Valentine's Day gorging herself with chocolate because the special day fell at the end of a lengthy diet. The Crazy In Love singer admits she has been watching what she eats for the past two months - so she'd look trim and sexy next to Tina Turner at the Grammy Awards. And now the big event has passed, Knowles plans to celebrate the most romantic day of the year in style. She explains, "I dieted before the Grammys because, after the holidays, I needed to drop a couple pounds. So, now I can eat whatever I want. I want a lot of chocolate. A lot of carbs." Other than that, she's planning a quiet night in with boyfriend Jay-Z. Knowles adds, "(It'll be) really quiet - a great movie and a great meal." Jay-Z revealed though, he was planning a romantic surprise for Beyoncé. The producer told US TV show 'Extra': "I'm very romantic and very suave. I'm going to do something really great for her but only she'll know about it!"

ARETHA SLAMS BEYONCE'S GRAMMY INTRO
Posted on 13 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Aretha Franklin has launched a retaliatory swipe at Beyonce Knowles for introducing fellow pop diva Tina Turner as the "Queen of Soul" at Sunday's Grammy Awards. Franklin has long been known by that nickname in a singing career that, like Turner's, began in the 1950s and insists she has no plans to abdicate. Franklin said: "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce. "However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy."

BEYONCE GETS EMOTIONAL AT THE GRAMMYS
Posted on 12 Feb 2008 by Ewe
Tina Turner reduced Beyoncé to tears after the pair took to the stage at the 50th Grammy Awards. But it was all in the name of admiration, as the R&B sensation admitted that she was overwhelmed after performing with the legendary singer. "She's my hero and my icon. It was just crazy. I went into the room and I just balled because I couldn't believe it" - BeyoncéTurner, 68, took a break from retirement in Europe to perform a show-stopping version of Proud Mary with Beyoncé. Speaking at the Grammy after-party, the Irreplaceable star explained the duet was a dream come true. Beyoncé said: "She is the absolute best. Its something that I've been wanting to do for years and it actually happened. It's amazing when those moments actually come to life. "She's my hero and my icon. It was just crazy. I went into the room and I just balled because I couldn't believe it." But it wasn't just Beyoncé who found the Grammy experience moving. Rapper Kanye West paid tribute to his mother Donda West, who died last year after complications from plastic surgery, by performing an emotional version of his 2005 hit Hey Mama. West took home four Grammys for best rap album of the year for Graduation, best rap solo performance for Stronger, best rap song for Good Life and best rap performance by a duo or group for his collaboration with Common on Southside.
