Beyonce - B'Day Anthology Video Album
Studio: Columbia/Sony Urban Music
DVD Release Date: April 3, 2007
Order: here

Editorial review: The B'Day Anthology Video Album was a Wal-Mart exclusive product in the United States but is now sold in other stores. This DVD contains the music videos already shot to promote the singles released from the album ("Deja Vu", "Ring the Alarm", "Irreplaceable", and "Listen"). In addition to those videos, Beyoncé also went on to record music videos to many of the rest of the tracks. Minor clips of all these videos were shown on MTV's TRL on the day Beyoncé went there to premiere "Beautiful Liar". These small clips were also shown on BET's 106 & Park while the singer was there to premiere "Upgrade U". The compilation DVD was also promoted by a BET and a MTV Hits special which premiered the videos with Beyoncé's commentary about the filming process and/or the lyrics. In late March, the music videos which were previously unseen by the public leaked on the internet. On April 2, the full-length videos for "Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix)", "Kitty Kat/Green Light", and "Suga Mama" premiered on BET to promote the B'Day Anthology Video Album which was released on the following day. The videos have garnished thousands of views on YouTube and other video sharing sites even though this clearly violates the terms of use of those sites. Another flagrant copyright infringement is the fact that this video album contains the track "Still in Love (Kissing You)", a cover of the song "I'm Kissing You" originally performed by Des'Ree. Des'ree filed a lawsuit against Beyoncé on April 18, 2007, alleging Knowles never obtained proper clearance to use the song. Des'ree claims the terms her team submitted to Knowles for use of the song were not satisfactory, and as a result the former Destiny's Child star ignored copyright law and recorded her own version. The terms stated Knowles couldn't retitle the song or film a video using the track. Des'ree is seeking $150,000 in damages.

The film chronicles the legendary concert of Jay-Z's performance at Madison Square Garden in November 2003. In an unprecedented event, a hip-hop artist sold out an arena in only two hours. The event was a spectacular culmination of Jay-Z's recording career prior to his self-proclaimed retirement from solo performing. Guest performers included Jay-Z's closest friends and music industry colleagues: BeyoncA©, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, R. Kelly, Foxy Brown, Pharrell, and Questlove and The Illadelphonics along with appearances by hip hop icons Damon Dash, Rick Rubin, Slick Rick, P. Diddy and many others. Viewers get the rare glimpse of Jay-Z's creative process as he searches for inspiration, poetry, and perfection in his songs. Beyonce: Live at Wembley
DVD & CD
Studio: Sony Music Entertain
DVD Release Date: April 27, 2004
Order: here

Editorial review: Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD.
Tracks: DVD: Baby Boy, Naughty Girl, Fever, Hip Hop Star, Yes, Work It Out, Gift From Virgo, Be With You, Speechless, DC Medley, Me, Myself And I, Summertime, Dangerously In Love, Crazy In Love.
CD: Wishing On A Star, What's It Gonna Be, My First Time, Krazy In Luv (Maurice's Nu Soul Remix), Baby Boy (Junior World's Mixshow), Naughty Girl (Calderone Quayle Club Mix).

Destiny's Child - World Tour
Studio: Sony Music Entertain
DVD Release Date: July 8, 2003
Order: here

Editorial review: This concert, from a 2003 performance in Rotterdam (The Netherlands), is full of energy and features a great mix of vocals and music that will please any follower of Destiny's Child or fan of R&B music concerts. The show has an exciting opening with "Independent Women", followed by a half-dozen more jammin' dance hits, then calms down in the middle with some slow grooves (featuring Kelly and Michelle as leads), and resumes with more dance jams through to the end. It's a well-paced show. The girls look and sing great, the band is tight, and the dancers add a nice ingredient to the funk-party setting. If you're a DC fan or a collector of concert videos, you'll be happy buying this DVD.
Tracks: Program Start, Independent Women Part 1, No, No, No Part 2 (Featuring Wyclef Jean), Bug a Boo, Bills, Bills, Bills, Get On the Bus, Nasty Girl, Emotion, Ooh Child, Heard a Word, Dangerously in Love, Gospel Melody, Bootylicious, Say My Name, Work it Out, Proud Mary, Jumpin', Jumpin', Survivor, Happy Face.

The Platinum's On The Wall
Studio: Sony/Columbia
DVD Release Date: October 29, 2001
Order: here

Editorial review: With their sleek, cyber R&B sounds and lyrical/video world of cars, money, shopping, boys, and sex, Texas's Destiny's Child have hardly broken any new ground. However, The Platinum's on the Wall captures them at their career height and proves no one is doing this stuff with more grandeur, sass, and ice-cool efficiency. To paraphrase one commentator in 2001: This is Destiny's Child's world, the rest of us are just living in it. Beginning with their first, 1997 hit, the slow-burning, teasing "No, No, No (Part 1)" and including the foxy trot of "Bills, Bills, Bills" (an attack on backsliding homeboys as withering as TLC's "No Scrubs"), these videos, which feature costume changes on an almost frame-by-frame basis, are certainly lavish. The group, however, is seen to best advantage on the likes of "Say My Name," in which Beyonce Knowles, the group's leader and true star, gets to show off her persona a little. Disappointingly, the extra "biography" feature here is not a steamy account of their rapid rise and frequent personnel changes but a dreary, text-only account of their numerous TV appearances and platinum sales figures.
Tracks: No, No, No Part I, No, No, No Part 2 (Featuring Wyclef Jean), Bills, Bills, Bills, Bug A Boo, Say My Name, Jumpin', Jumpin' (So So Def Remix), Independent Women Part 1 live at Brit Awards.

The Concert for New York City
Studio: Sony Music Entertain
DVD Release Date: October 20, 2001
Order: here

Editorial review: On October 20, 2001, this now-historic concert took place at Madison Square Garden, a mere six weeks after the horrific terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Thousands of firefighters, police officers, survivors, families, and fans witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime event as, in the space of nearly six hours, many legendary musical performers donated their time and their talent to one of the greatest causes ever, in the process giving their audience an unforgettable burst of pure emotion. Organized by Sir Paul McCartney, the Concert for New York City was an overwhelming experience that deserves to be saved for posterity. The two-CD audio recording is crammed with dozens of superb performances but doesn't give a sense of the whole show that this two-DVD set certainly does. Not only can we relive such seminal performers from that evening as the Who, David Bowie, John Mellencamp, and Sir Paul himself, we can see the charming and personal short films made for the occasion by such New York filmmakers as Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese, or the dozens of celebrities and unsung firefighters and police officers who immortalized that day with their stories and musical introductions. There is one quibble: the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris," one of the blues standards Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy played, and McCartney's "From a Lover to a Friend" and "Lonely Road" are all missing, which seems curious, considering that the entire show could have easily fit onto two DVDs. So don't erase that videotape you made of the concert the night it aired, because that remains the definitive version. But this DVD (with very good Dolby 5.1 surround sound) comes close.
Tracks: David Bowie: America, David Bowie: Heroes, Billy Crystal, Senator Tom Daschle, Billy Crystal and Al Quinones FDNY, Bon Jovi: Livin' on a Prayer, Bon Jovi: Wanted Dead or Alive, Bon Jovi: It's My Life, Mark Wahlberg, Jay-Z: Izzo (H.O.V.A.), Billy Crystal with Matt Long FDNY, Goo Goo Dolls: American Girl, Susan Sarandon and Everald Taylor NYPD, Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorsese: The Neighborhood (short film), Billy Joel: Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway), Billy Joel: New York State of Mind, Will Farrell: W, Chris Kattan, Destiny's Child: Emotion, Destiny's Child: Gospel Medley and many more.

Dreamgirls
Studio: DreamWorks
DVD Release Date: May 1, 2007
Order: here

Editorial review: The spirit of Motown runs through the long-awaited film adaption of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which centers around a young female singing trio who burst upon the music scene in the '60s, complete with bouffant hairdos, glitzy gowns, and a soul sound new to the white-bread American music charts. Sound familiar? You aren't the first one to draw comparisons to the meteoric rise of the Supremes, and despite any protests to the contrary, this is most definitely a thinly veiled reinterpretation of that success story. The Dreamettes--statuesque Deena (Beyonce Knowles), daffy Lorell (Anika Noni Rose) and brassy Effie (Jennifer Hudson)--are a girl group making the talent-show rounds when they're discovered by car salesman and aspiring music manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx). Sensing greatness (as well as a new marketing opportunity) Curtis signs the Dreamettes as backup singers for R&B star James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). But when Early's mercurial ways and singing style don't mesh with primarily white audiences, Curtis moves the newly-renamed Dreams to center stage--with Deena as lead singer in place of Effie. And that's not the only arena in which Effie is replaced, as Curtis abandons their love affair for a relationship with star-in-the-making Deena. Besides the Supremes comparison, one can't talk about Dreamgirls now without revisiting its notorious Oscar snub; though it received eight nominations, the most for any film from 2006, it was shut out of the Best Picture and Director races entirely. Was the oversight justified? While Dreamgirls is certainly a handsomely mounted, lovingly executed and often vibrant film adaptation, it inspires more respect than passion, only getting under your skin during the musical numbers, which become more sporadic as the film goes on. Writer-director Bill Condon is definitely focused on recreating the Motown milieu (down to uncanny photographs of Knowles in full Diana Ross mode), he often forgets to flesh out his characters, who even on the Broadway stage were underwritten and relied on powerhouse performances to sell them to audiences. (Stage fans will also note that numerous songs are either truncated or dropped entirely from the film.) Condon has assembled a game cast, as Knowles does a canny riff on the essence of Diana Ross' glamour (as opposed to an all-out impersonation) and Rose makes a peripheral character surprisingly vibrant; only Foxx, who never gets to pour on the charisma, is miscast. Still, there are two things even the most cranky viewers will warm to in Dreamgirls: the performances of veteran Eddie Murphy and newcomer Jennifer Hudson. Murphy is all sly charm and dazzling energy as the devilish Early, who's part James Brown, part Little Richard, and all showman. And Hudson, an American Idol contestant who didn't even make the top three, makes an impressive debut as the larger-than-life Effie, whose voice matches her passions and stubbornness. Though she sometimes may seem too young for the role, Hudson nails the movie's signature song, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," with a breathtaking power that must be seen and heard to believe. And for those five minutes, if not more, you will be in Dreamgirls' thrall.

Pink Panther
Studio: Sony Pictures
DVD Release Date: June 13, 2006
Order: here

Editorial review: If anyone could step into the huge shoes of comedic genius left by Peter Sellers as bumbling French policeman Jacques Clouseau, it's Steve Martin. Sellers made Clouseau a true icon of character and comedy in five Pink Panther movies in the '60s and '70s; Martin has arguably already attained Sellers' rank as an entertainment talent, so it only makes sense that he became Clouseau's heir apparent for the inevitable screen resurrection. This updated story of the priceless eponymous diamond purloined under mysterious circumstance and pursued with Keystone Cop-like antics by Clouseau is a frivolous yet winning pastiche of physical gags and riffs on Clouseau's hilariously impenetrable accent. A famous French football coach (Jason Statham in cameo mode) is wearing the stone, set as an engagement ring for his pop star fiance (Beyonce Knowles). But before a packed stadium crowd of thousands, the ring disappears from his finger as he falls dead from a poisoned dart. The wisp of a plot is secondary to the pratfalls of Martin's prim, prissy, and utterly inept Clouseau. He's brought onto the case by France's top cop (a drolly sophisticated Kevin Kline) who wants Clouseau to fail in a scheme to make himself a national hero. Even in a world where jokes about Viagra, flatulence and other familiar sophomoric subjects are required, Martin makes his Clouseau singularly memorable. You'll be fully expecting Clouseau to shatter priceless antiques, mangle his pronunciations (hamburger, anyone?), and prevail in the end, but Martin carries it off, giving homage to Sellers at the same time that he remakes the character in his own image as a comic master.

The Fighting Temptation
Studio: Paramount
DVD Release Date: February 3, 2004
Order: here

Editorial review: The Fighting Temptations may not cure the common cold with its FFF (Familiar Feel-Good Formula), but it'll definitely cure what ails you. Here's an unassuming, well-cast comedy drama, filled with forgiving spirit and jubilant gospel music, and its lessons go down as smooth as a mint julep in summertime. Mostly it's just good, harmless fun, beginning when a deceptive corporate ladder-climber (Cuba Gooding Jr.) returns from Manhattan to his southern-fried Georgia hometown to attend the funeral of a beloved aunt, whose will stipulates a reward of $150,000 if he'll direct the local church choir to win a big annual gospel music contest. The outcome is obvious, but veteran comedy director Jonathan Lynn keeps things percolating with casual flair, especially when a lovely lounge singer (Beyoncé Knowles, in a nicely downplayed costarring role) agrees to rejuvenate Gooding's choir, which teams rapping convicts, a boozy barfly (on organ), and bible-thumping prudes. With musical appearances by the O'Jays and the Blind Boys of Alabama, among others, how could this be anything but delightful?
